Help[Opinions] Rowena/Rowenna/Ravenna?
WDYTO the names Rowena, Rowenna, and Ravenna? And how do you pronounce them?
I think I like Rowena more in theory than in practice. I don't like that EEEE sound because it sounds like whining. But I do like the nickname Ro.
Rowenna isn't in the database but I think I got it from someone here. Is it too elaborate? I feel it has a better sound than Rowena because it gets rid of the whine.
Ravenna was a play by Oscar Wilde about the Italian City. I suppose since it's technically a place name some here won't like it anyway. It was in that abhorrent movie, "Snow White and the Huntsman." The evil queen is called Ravenna but I don't think they ever say her name. I just know it from imdb cast listing.

I feel the same way as you do about Rowena - the middle "WEEEEEEEE" sound puts me off of it. Rowenna is nice, but I feel like a real Rowenna would constantly have her name misspelled as Rowena, and even be called Rowena.
Ravenna, on the other hand, is just all kinds of cool.

I pronounce Rowena ro-WEE-na and Rowenna ro-WEN-a. I agree that ro-WEE-na sounds whiny. I like Rowena pronounced ro-WEN-a, but a lot of people would probably pronounce it ro-EE-na since that is the usual pronunciation, so using Rowenna would make more sense. I don't think that Rowenna is too elaborate. It would at least help ensure that people pronounce it ro-WEN-a rather than ro-WEE-na.
I like Ravenna. I can imagine people mistaking it for Rebecca, though. I don't live anywhere near Ohio, but for people who live near Ravenna, Ohio, it could make the name less appealing even though the Italian City came first.
Out of the three, I would probably go with Rowenna.

I like Rowena, almost enough to use.
Rowenna sounds highly unattractive to my ears and looks like a spelling error.
Ravenna ... I dislike place names for people, and though I don't know about the movie, if you say it's abhorrent I'll believe you! I suppose they picked the name as an elaboration of Raven, which is the ultimate bird of ill omen and not a happy choice either, I would have thought.

I love Ravenna. It was once a top favorite of mine. I like Rowena/Rowenna too but ONLY pronounced "ro-WEN-ah" because like you, I dislike the whiney-ness of the EEEE sound. I think Rowenna may lend itself better to the "EN" pronunciation.

I really like Rowena, however, I hate the 'ween' sound because it reminds me of wiener. Also, I just find the 'wen' sound more attractive in this case. While I don't care for the way Rowenna looks, I do understand why some feel it would be necessary to avoid the 'ween' sound. Ravenna doesn't appeal to me although again, I'd pronounce it with the 'wen' sound.

Rowena is my favourite. I've loved it ever since I read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the first time. I pronounce it roh-WEE-nah, I actually quite like the EE sound. Ro is indeed a cute nn :)
