I'm not sure what part of the world he was from. I liked his name, though.Anyway it's masculine, and foreign to me (US). If I met a girl Mitra I'd try saying it MITT-tra first because I'd think it was made up. And if she were Mitra "MEE-tra" and her parents were US-born I'd suspect that either they were ignorant about the male name Mitra, or else that I am ignorant of some usage of Mitra for girls.

I used to know a little girl know Mitra. She and her family were from Iran.

The only thing I can think of when I saw this name is mitral, as in mitral valve.
I would just recommend demetra or Demitra.
