Erik and Reg have not married for very long when a close mutual friend, Lisbeth, approached them with shocking news. Beth had been fighting breast cancer for the past few years, and after an extensive treatment and surgery had previously been pronounced clean from the disease, but recently she had discovered that the cancer had not been completely wiped out and had progressed, unnoticed, towards her spine and brain. Beth was a divorcee, having married at the age of eighteen and separated at twenty-three, and had raised her children Aaron and Ana since then without intervention from the father. It was therefore doubly shocking that Beth had only been given half a year at most to live, and having heard this news, she had decided to inform her closest friends, so that they could watch over her children after she is gone.
And true to prediction, just at the start of the seventh month since her prognosis was declared, Beth's body succumbed to the cancer, and she passed away. Immediately afterwards, Erik and Reg offered for her children to stay with them until things "settle down", as having them live in their mother's flat would be too painful for them. But a week became a month, and after a long moment weighing the pros and cons, Erik suggested to Reg that they adopt Aaron and Ana; the suggestion was warmly received. For their part, Aaron was understandably more apprehensive of his new parents, and while he adapted well enough to his new family, still never called his new parents "Mum" and "Dad" - especially "Mum", which he felt was Beth's alone; Ana was more receptive, and even though she now had to share a room with her brother due to the lack of space in the Summers' flat, felt more secure now that she had people she trusted to look over her.
