Zara had just turned a year old when John got the news that he was being laid off. It was a difficult time for Gracie and John, but they stuck together and after almost six months of John being unemployed, and in the process finding out they were pregnant again, John got a call about a job several states over, near Gracie's parents (who wanted to help them out) and they made the decision to move their fast-growing family.
It was the winter months in their new home, snow on the ground, and Gracie was 8 1/2 months pregnant, but still running/waddling around in the garden with their active 2 year old Zara, while John was inside grading papers. He could hear his two little women laughing through the window, when all of a sudden, he hears a scream, and it isn't little Zara's playful scream. John rushes outside to see Gracie laying on the ground on her back. She slipped on the ice that had been covered by snow, and hit her head. Gracie insists she is fine, but John takes her to the hospital anyway. On the way there, Gracie feels slight contractions. She is worried but stays as calm as she can, instead focusing on Zara and keeping her entertained in the backseat on the long car ride.
When they get to the hospital, they discover that Gracie has had a mild concussion, and on top of that, it appears that the fall sent her into labour! Gracie is watched closely throughout and after the labour process, but little Alex Balthazar is safely delivered, and is a happy, healthy baby boy.
