I was wondering about Dermot today. I pronounce it DIR-mit. Now that I looked it up, it apparently comes from the Irish Diarmaid, pronounced DEER-mid.
How would you pronounce Dermot?
What do you think of it?

What middle names would you pair it with?

DUR-mut.
Like the first part of dermatology and the last part of marmot.
It's alright. Seems a little dorky, I think because of the ERM part, which I associate with names like Herman and Nermal and Kermit. But it would not matter much, if at all, if I met a real life Dermot. I'd think it was kinda cool! It's easier than Declan.
I don't think I'd worry about it fitting in with the other names, because they are a very eclectic mix already.

The comment about our other kids' names already being an eclectic mix makes sense. Maybe I don't need to worry about that much.

Aw, we almost named our cat Dermot. :-) It's so handsome and underappreciated.
I pronounce it the same way you do. I'm in the U.S. And if it makes you feel any better my mother, who is from Ireland and still speaks with a brogue, pronounces Dermot and Diarmaid the same way you do.

Definitely dumb luck. I've given up trying to remember everyone's tastes here. People change their screen names just to make my life more difficult, so why should I try? It's all about me, after all. :-P Or my bad memory.
Dermot Rafferty flows wonderfully. But knowing a Rafferty family makes me jealous for their sakes. If it's a family surname for the child, then I'm all for it.
Dermot Emmanuel flow beautifully as well. But my heart belongs to Dermot Amadeus. Normally the repeated "d" sounds might put me off. But the imagery from the 1980n movie with Irish folklore Dermot makes my brain very happy. :-)
Dermot Rafferty flows wonderfully. But knowing a Rafferty family makes me jealous for their sakes. If it's a family surname for the child, then I'm all for it.

3) Nope, I don't know any Dermots.

5) Eh, it's so-so. It fits in quite well with Emerson and Lachlan, not so well with Niko. Your boys' names are sort of a mixed bag (not criticizing...I like that about them). It would be hard to find a name that fits well with all three. In your shoes, I might look for a name that is a little closer to Niko, stylistically, but ultimately I wouldn't give up a name I loved just because it makes Niko more of an outlier.

5) If my husband and I could actually agree on more than one name, I might push for one closer to Niko's style. But it seems quite unlikely that we will ever agree on more than one at a time! :)

Even though it comes from Diarmaid, it isn't pronounced like Diarmaid as it is the Anglicised version. It is pronounced exactly how it is spelled - DER-mot.
I think it is such a handsome and rugged name. I have a second cousin named this and had a great-uncle with the name. My younger brother also had a school friend with the name. In all cases, I don't think they ever had a problem with it although I have seen comments on this board before about it sounding like 'dermatitis.'

I think of Dermot O'Leary who presents shows on English television and radio. I pronounce it (and so do the people on TV) DER-mot. DER as in unDER.
I think it fits in well with Emerson and Lachlan, but not as much with Niko. It could work though.
