P2: Damon Harold Horsfell (31)

DS/ DS/ DD/ DD: Cecil Sebastian / Tristan Laurence / Simone Verity / Astrid Pearl
Dfishes: Lincoln, Kedzie, PulaskiIt's been five years, and things are going okay for Franny, Damon, and the kids. Franny really enjoyed her freelance business, but as soon as Miles was old enough for preschool she gave it up and went back to corporate photography, working for an internet realtor. Damon continued to rise through the ranks at the hospital, and was recently promoted to department head. Hazel is in third grade. Her favorite thing is drawing, not surprising for the daughter of a photographer and a granddaughter of artists. Miles just started first grade and is obsessed with animals, especially big cats like lions and tigers. His room is a jungle of nature books.About two years after Miles was born, Franny and Damon decided they wanted one more child, but a year and a half later they were no closer to conceiving. Damon made an appointment with a well-known fertility expert, who diagnoses them with secondary infertility. Franny and Damon aren't sure how to move forward. They take a break for about three months, but ultimately decide to go forward with fertility treatments. It's an ordeal. Franny conceives their first round of IUI, but quickly miscarries. Their second try gets no results. They think about giving up, but decide to try one more time... and it works. Franny conceives. Franny is worried because her morning sickness is much more severe than with earlier pregnancies, and at their seven week scan they find out why: she's carrying quadruplets. Franny and Damon immediately panic. They immediately ask about selective abortion - it seems like the most logical option. But neither of them hurry to make the appointment. Their lives feel like and endless debate. Franny keeps working, but finds it difficult. Her body is already changing and she's sick all the time. Is she willing to derail her career again? Will they be able to afford four kids? What about the kids they already have?Damon is in bed one night when he wakes up to a phone call. It's the police. Franny has been arrested. Damon calls his parents to come watch the kids, then rushes to the station. Franny had taken a midnight walk to clear her head, and found herself stopping at a school playground. She sat, looks at the jungle gym and wondering what she should do... and was arrested for trespassing on school grounds. No charges were filed. On the way home, Franny told Damon she wanted to keep all the babies. He said okay, let's do this.It was a very difficult pregnancy. At nineteen weeks, Franny had to start bedrest, a difficult task with two elementary age children. It was going okay until two weeks later, when Franny swore she felt a contraction. She rushed to the hospital, but thankfully it was a false alarm. They sent her home with a contraction monitor, but she was still able to stay home fr another month or so. At twenty-six weeks she's admitted to the hospital, where she remains for the rest of her pregnancy. It was torture. For the last month she couldn't even take a deep breath, and the last week she spent on oxygen support. Finally, the doctors decided her body couldn't take any more. At thirty-one weeks, the quads are born! The next four weeks are some of the most stressful of Damon and Franny's lives. Though all four babies are above three pounds (Simon is the biggest at 3 lbs 11 oz and Astrid the smallest at 3 lb 2 oz), they need lots of care when they're born. All four are breathing at birth, but are quickly intubated shortly after birth to give them support while they're lungs develop. By five days old Simone is off oxygen support while Astrid and Tristan are on Cpap, but poor Cecil is having a harder time and still needs full oxygen. A week later all four are breathing without assistance and just five weeks after birth they all go home. It's a big adjustment, and they're getting lots of help from Damon's parents. Hazel and Miles sometimes have trouble understanding why they don't get the same attention they did before, but overall everyone's doing okay! In some ways, Damon is having the hardest time. He'd love to spend more time with the babies, but now it's more important than every that he work, even picking up extra shifts. Every bit helps when you suddenly have four more kids!
