Help[Opinions] Hugh
I've recently become fond of the name Hugh, but I'm wondering if it has any immediate associations to a person. I saw the posting about Rhett the other day and immediately thought of Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind. There are definitely some notable people with this name (Mr. Heffner for one), and I was wondering if anyone associated this name with something or someone. Example: "My name is Jasmine." "Oh, your parents must really love the movie Aladdin."

The more I see Hugh, the more I like it. I'm still a little turned off by the "ew" sound, though.
My first association is Hugh Laurie, who is probably most well known for House, although I haven't seen it - I remember him from Blackadder mainly. It's not a very strong association though, like I wouldn't assume Hugh's parents were fans of Mr Laurie.

I just associate its sound with sneezes and "OMG It stinks!" noises that people make. HYOO! It just sounds like a noise to me. And with a J sound in the surname it sounds like "huge [rest of surname]."
I guess I might think someone who named their kid Hugh was probably inspired mostly by Hugh Grant and Hugh Jackman. Possibly without even realizing it. Like people who use Mila are inspired by Mila Kunis, maybe without even realizing it. Because those people made these names better known and more fashionable sounding. But they are not exclusively associated with particular people - Hugh is a reasonably common ordinary name.

My midwife named her son Hugh this summer. I've never really thought much about it, but it's okay. I don't tend toward one-syllable names as first names. I feel like I've seen a lot of BA with one-syllable middle names though. Things like James and John and Joel in the middle. Maybe Hugh could get some use there too?

I don't immediately think of anyone but if I gave it just a tiny bit of thought, Hugh Heffner and Hugh Grant spring to mind. But since I don't normally think about them or see them around it isn't a knee jerk reaction to the name like Jasmine and Rhett are.
But I like Hugo more. Hugh is too much like 'you' I suppose. Hugo is like 'you go' so the name is just cheering you on. lol I don't know.
