I think Xander looks childish. My cousin Alexander was called Xander or Xand all through childhood. When he started secondary school at 11 he asked everyone to start calling him Alex as it's more grown up. It also looks a bit incomplete to me, probably because the X at the beginning is strange - so few words start with X.
if I was going to use Xander without Alexander as a full name, I would probably spell it Zander as it looks less awkward.
