Help[Opinions] Theodore vs Abraham
Husband and I have decided to have a baby next year (or early 2015) so already we are arguing about names!
Our no1 favourite for like 3 years is Theodore. I'm waining on the idea because I feel like Theo might be getting more popular (I only know one and he's 15). He also like Theo whilst I prefer Teddy.
Abraham "Abe or Bram" is another name that has cropped up into the picture. His mum wanted to name him that but he got David instead (boooring! lol). I also had a great uncle Abraham which is also cool. My problem with Abraham is its really not used much in Australia, I only know one and his family is massively religious.
We are not religious at all, so i'm worried that it will be too religious for us..
Our girls name is still solidly Daphne (or Hilda if I have the guts to use it)
WHat would you use to go with Daphne or Hilda.
Also suggest us some more boys names! (beacuse it will take a year to decide!) we like "grandma and grampa" names.

Well, I prefer Theodore, since that's what I named my son 2.5 years ago ;) It is a family name for us. We call him Theo, rarely Teddy. I have yet to run into another Theo. That being said, I do like Abraham as well, and bonus that it is a family name for you. My cousin has a stillborn son named Abraham, I've always had a softspot for the name. Also, I knew a guy in high school named Bram, he was cute and nice, so another good association for me :) You can't lose either way!
I prefer Daphne, but Hilda could be super cute too. I really think both Theodore and Abraham work well with both.

I strongly prefer Abraham to Theodore. Theodore sounds so dorky to me, though the nickname Ted doesn't.
Abraham is handsome and masculine and has so much Old Testament charm. Now I hope I haven't put you off it by mentioning the Old Testament. My four-year-old grandson is named Abraham nn Bram, and we are not at all a religious family; in fact both myself and Abraham's mom, my daughter, are atheists. But you can't deny that The Bible is a book that has had massive influence on our culture and I don't think being irreligious is any reason at all to eliminate any Biblical name and I don't think that the use of a Biblical name is any reason at all to assume that a family is religious. Abraham is not much used in the USA either these days but that's only a plus. You want your child's name to stand out, at least somewhat, don't you?
So I strongly urge you to strongly consider Abraham which is a great name and don't worry that it's "too religious", it isn't. Much better than Theodore. And Bram is a totally cool nickname, got a little bit of a dark side to it but in a good way.
As far as Daphne or Hilda, I really dislike both, so I can't really help you there.

Yeah Abraham is really growing on me. I know its a bit different with naming standards here in Australia, i wonder if my friends would think it was too religious.

I'd pick Theodore. I don't think it's ever going to be top ten, and it doesn't feel trendy. Abraham isn't really used here either and it sounds massively religious to me too. It's not a bad name, but I do think it's a strong candidate for potential trendiness, given the biblical name-trend from the US and a couple of cute nns - especially if a celebrity uses it, it could easily become the new Joshua or Jacob.
I like Daphne and Hilda, & would love to see a little Hilda.

I'd pick Theodore. I don't think it's ever going to be top ten, and it doesn't feel trendy. Abraham isn't really used here either and it sounds massively religious to me too. It's not a bad name, but I do think it's a strong candidate for potential trendiness, given the biblical name-trend from the US and a couple of cute nns - especially if a celebrity uses it, it could easily become the new Joshua or Jacob.

I'm responding to both you and Ninor. As stated above, my grandson is named Abraham and his mother was brought up with no religious training by both her atheist father and atheist myself, and is herself an atheist. As far as Abraham's father goes, I don't know that he's an atheist, but he is definitely not a religious person, does not attend church, never talks about religion, and liked to call the very very large church nearby "The Repentagon." They never worried that the use of the name would lead to the assumption that they are religious and I don't think it ever has. I normally don't argue with people's impressions of names, but in this case I have some personal experience so I thought it might be actually useful to the OP.

LOL @ the Repentagon! great. Yup I would expect Abraham to have a very different feel in the US - for starters, you've got Lincoln as a namesake, so it's probably had much more use. Here there are no well-known namesakes & it's unusual enough that I've never met or heard of one of any age. 59 boys were given the name last year - looking at the data, the majority of those were of African parentage (generally very religious) or Jewish. So it's a name we don't see very often except on religious folks, hence the association.

I love, love, love Theodore. Yes, it has gotten more popular during the last couple of years, but it's not too popular, and it's def. not a new Mason/Jacob. I feel Abraham is a little too heavy for a boy, and if you're not religious at all, then I'd stay away from it. If I met someone named Abraham I would assume his parents were really religious.
I think Daphne and Theodore goes together wonderfully, and I adore both names. What about Frederick, Oliver, Peregrine, Solomon, Maxwell, Isidore, Quentin?

Both Theodore and Abraham are nice names, but if you are not religious, then I would choose Theodore. I also think Rupert, Edmund, Henry, Hugo, Leopold, Frederick, Vincent, Chester, Barnaby, Miles, Jude, Dexter, Sebastian, Wesley, Rhett, Tobias, Oscar and Oliver are also nice and you might like some. Daphne is definitely my fave of the two girl names, my DH and I actually really like Daphne too. Hilda seems a bit frumpy and "milk maid" to me, sorry! Daphne Hilda could always work as a combo though. What about Daphne Jane, Daphne Emmeline, Daphne Edith, Daphne Tabitha, Daphne Annabelle, Daphne Ada, Daphne Abigail, Daphne Sabrina, Daphne Freya, Daphne Guinevere, Daphne Gwendolyn, Daphne Josephine, Daphne Katherine, Daphne Lucinda, Daphne Lucille, Daphne Lorelei, Daphne Matilda, Daphne Mae, Daphne Martha, Daphne Beth, Daphne Bernice, Daphne Charlotte, Daphne Celeste, Daphne Cleo, Daphne Clara or even Daphne Rebecca.

I like both Theodore and Abraham though, I also like both Theo and Teddy equally (it's nice to have two good options with very different 'feels' so you can see what suits the kid), and I adore Bram but hate Abe.

I know two Theodores, one about 8 years old and always called Theodore and one my age (25) who always goes by Theo. I don't think either is going to be popular enough anytime soon that you're in any danger of more than one in a grade or possibly even a school.

Theodore and Abraham are both wonderful! I'd vote Theodore Bram as a combo.
Daphne is great and so fun! Way way way better than Hilda. :)
