Help[Opinions] Clemency and Clemence
What do you think of these names? I feel like they get overlooked a lot amongst Clement and Clementine on these boards. I think I really like Clemency on a girl, but I'm a tad worried it's too criminal-justice-system and/or political. But then again, people seem to like Mercy.
I can't decide whether I like Clemence more as a masculine or feminine name. The database lists it as feminine only, but it sounds enough like Clement and Clarence that I don't see why it couldn't be male.
Any combos you want to throw out at me? Here are some I came up with off the top of my head-

I dislike all Clem names. The sound just overwhelms the rest of the name and makes it feel damp and clammy and unpleasant.
I do think Clemency is a little criminal justice-y, Mercy has more of a religious feel to it to me in terms of the virtue, but Clemency has fallen out of use except with death row cases it seems.
Clemence definitely strikes me as unisex too.

I admit I do tend to think of the court system when I see Clemency, but the sound is nice. Personally, I prefer Clemence and it's similarity in form to Constance, Prudence and Patience, other "virtue" names I enjoy. As you mention, the ending sound is in line with Clarence (and Laurence and Terrence, too) but I do think Clemence, itself, feels feminine; perhaps knowing that Clement is there for the guys feeds into that perception.
Interestingly, you've made me think about Constance/Constancy. As a first name, I can't imagine ever preferring Constancy but, in the middle slot, I can see where one might want another form to improve flow/sound in a combo, and the same would make sense for Clemency too.
Of your Clemency combos, Clemency Opal is the standout for me; also like Clemency Ruth. Of your female Clemence combos, Clemence Ophelia is my favorite (and I'm really wanting Clemence Dorothy since I spied her below). Rosemary Clemence is my favorite of your combos overall, followed closely by Agatha Clemence. A few ideas for fun...

Clemency is way too much of a word to be used. It falls in line with Justice, Lyric, or Journey. Although I think those are better. I just dont really see the appeal of Clemency.
When I hear Clement it sounds like it is missing something at the end that could turn it into a medical condition such as Clementis. Doesnt sound like a good condition to have! Just on its own Clement sounds like a sneeze.
Clementine is very sweet and beautiful. A little southern fir a first name, which is fine but I prefer it in the mn spot.

I can't get enthused about Clemency because it's such a word meaning leniency, and sorta evokes pathos to me. And it's vaguely cutesy, like Dulce or Felicity.
Clement seems more masculine to me, while Clemence seems more feminine. Clementine is nice, and I associate it as feminine, but it could sound masculine too, if not for stereotyping / other associations.
Something about Clemence makes me think of CLENCHing. Rather than clemence. It's so tight. Clement makes me think of clement weather and such, balmy and gentle and pleasant. So it's the only Clem-name I could like.

I like Clemency! It has a very clear sound. I find it difficult to imagine on a person, though. It might be better as a middle name.
