Help[Opinions] Walter
I've been reading a lot of Walt Whitman lately and the name Walter is really growing on me. The poetry is really great to read and reread and I like that this name would honor an artist I really respect and feel personally moved by. The meaning of "ruler of the army" or "strong fighter" (on some sites) is nice because to me it implies strength, courage, and independence. I also like the nicknames that go with it - Walt, Wally, or even Waldo. I feel like it's not something you hear all the time without being "out there". I've also always had a love of -er or -or ending names (like Sawyer, Taylor, Cooper, Thatcher etc.) and Walter fits that sound without being a "trendy occupation name" (so to speak). Just wondering what people's opinions of Walter are (most likely with Walt as the main nn). It doesn't bother me really that it's an "older" sounding name. People would get used to it and everyone loves a throwback...haha! Any opinions and/or possible middle name combos would be appreciated! Thanks!

I definitely have love for Walter. It's strong and dignified. I dig Walt too. However, it is now so tied to Breaking Bad in my mind, you might as well call him Heisenberg ;) That will fade in time of course, as Walter is such a classic, that it won't remind tied to a character or show (no matter how epic ;)) the way a more unusual or uncommon name would.

I love Walter! It is tying for 3rd place on my list, and we were seriously considering using it on our son, except my mother strongly declared it to be an old man name. She thought it was just awful. As for nn, Walt isn't my favorite, but it doesn't really bother me. Wally is awful and reminds me of Willie... shudder.
I love the -er names too, though not the ones you mentioned. I love Peter, Walter and Hector.
Walter was a character name for Anne's dreamy artist son in the sequels to Anne of Green Gables, so was when I started to love that name. I think Lucy Maude Montgomery fantastic character names developed my early love of names.

I really like Walter, but I really dislike Walt. Wally I don't really like, either, but can see becoming ok with it for the sake of Walter. But I never embraced my love for it that much because my husband doesn't like it at all. I do think it's a very handsome name. Very intelligent and neighborly.
