[Opinions] Gertrude
I think this is a splendid name. Strong, original and too often maligned.
I have just named my whippet pup Gertie. And it suits her admirably.

I'm not alone!
I love Gertrude! I think it's beautiful and feminine, but with a heft to it, similar to Margaret.
I'd never use it for a person because it's so vehemently hated by so many people, but I'd love to use it for a pet. I think it'd be great for an English Bulldog.
There is a little girl called Trudy at my new job and I am just delighted every time I hear her name.

I like it cuz of this gal:
Such a cute name. :)

I remember that there's a Gertie in the old Perry Mason series (the black and white oldies from the '50s) - she's the telephonist who is seldom if ever seen, and when she does finally get before the camera she's a 30-something blonde with big blue eyes (a real counter to the name's stereotype).
All the same, I think Gertrude is rather ugly - that "rude" bit doesn't help its appeal!

Gertie is a great name for a whippet. There's a slight irony to it that makes it seem edgy and cute.
The name Gertrude is pretty in German. In English it's gur-trood and that's not very nice sounding. It's a strong name - I think of it as similar in style to Matilda and Irma, antique and therefore a little matronly.

It's a good pet name- my cats name is Gertrude but we only call her Rudy :)
I don't care for it on a human though. Even though I'm starting to warm to Gretchen and Gretel I just cannot get on board with Gertrude

I used to like this name, but the 'rtr' is as others said clunky, I think it's actually more clunky to say than to hear.
I also realized I was liking it for the nicknames Gert and especially Gertie which I Love, but now I love it as a nickname-cum-name.

Oh my goodness O_o
This has been one of my least favourite names since forever. I heard it in a book when I was about five, and was astounded by the ugliness of it. I remember asking my sister (who was reading to me) "are you sure? Are you SURE that's her name?"
And here is someone who thinks the name is splendid. That is glowing praise! Which just proves...
:D
Your whippet sounds adorable.

It's clunky. Some people find clunky endearing. I want to find it endearing, but I'd never be gutsy enough to like clunky I don't think.
I know a Gertrude at my church who goes by Gertie.
Also, my aunt's name is Gertrud (no E) and she's super awesome - even if I don't love her name.

Gertie is cute for a dog, but I can't see it on a child. Gertrude is so harsh and clunky sounding, I just can't imagine it on a sweet little girl.
Cheers for getting a whippet! So handsome!
Gertie is a good name, too.
Gertrude goes better in French, I think.
My grade 3 teacher's name was Gertrude, not that I called her that; she was the one that taught me , finally, to read, at 8 years old. So I have a fondness for the name.

I have to agree. I am a lover of clunky names, oldy lady names, etc. But this name just.. no. The Gert sound and the Rude sound just make for an unpleasant combination. It is great for a pup though.
