If you speak English, it seems like a stretch as a nickname for Nicholas. But as a short form for Nicolas, say in Spanish or French, it's cute and not so affected.

I'm torn on this one though. I think Nico on a girl is both way too affected and pretty cool.

I've always liked Nico but don't care for Nick or Nicholas, and Nico seems like a nn to me. Try too hard? Is it popular? I wouldn't think "parents are trying to hard" if I saw a little Nico. I would love to see a little Nico. I've never met a Nico, though have known several Nicks.

It feels to me like a try-to-hard girls name..... Sort of like Luca

It's hard for to picture on an adult who's ancestry doesn't lend itself to the name. Works well on a child though

I like Nico a lot and don't think it's trying too hard at all. I've even considered it myself as a short form of Dominic. My nephew is Nicholas / Nick and I thought Nico (pronounced with the long e sound) wouldn't get too tangled us with his name.

Try too hardy. A name a hipster would choose because they really wanted to use Nicholas or Nicole but were terrified at the thought that there might be other Nicholases or Nicoles in their kid's class ...
And then five years down the road they find out all the other hipsters had the same idea.

It's cool as a nn for Nicholas, Nicola, Nicolette, etc. but a bit unconsistent on its own.

I love it. We used Niko for our son, but I like both spellings. I think it's cool ad energetic.

Where I live, every other Nicholas is a Nico. So it's lost all its connotations for me.

I've read a series where Nick is an immortal dwarf, made immortal by Tycho Brahe. He's mouthy and a nymphomaniac. Too tied to the character to me.

I don't think it try-hard at all. It's a subtle cool imo, and not actually all that unusual in my area cause it's popular with the fairly large Greek population here. I think I knew more Nicos growing up than Nicks! Anyway, I prefer it to Nick personally.
