[Opinions] Jemma and Sandy
What do you think of the names Jemma and Sandy? Are they different if they're on a real person for a fictional one?

I don't mind Jemma at all. I think it's miles less tacky than Gemma, miles more interesting than Jenna, and miles more spunky than Emma. Sandy is fine, but very dated. I certainly wouldn't use it as a full name.

There were so many Sandy people in the 1950s that my image of it is all tiny waists, flared skirts, Coca Cola advert style, perms and cigarettes and, bizarrely, ankle socks! And then time passed and their waists spread and their skirts flattened and they and their names (Patricia, Linda and the girls) went out of fashion.Jemma, on the other hand, was never prevalent IRL. Gemma used to appear now and then, but I think mostly in fiction; if it has an image, it's a pretentious one. Jemma looks like a postmodern nn for Jemima.

I have a cousin named Jemma, spelled this way. I'm not a big fan of the name, but it suits her. I like Sandy but for a boy as a nickname for Alexander.

Jemma is kind of tacky, even more so than Gemma; tacky and posh at the same time. Much prefer Jenna.Sandy, is that on a girl or a boy? In the US you almost never see it on a man anymore. Sandy on a girl is cute, especially as short for Sandra. My stepfather's older sister is Sandra Leigh, nn Sandy.
