I don't think it is dated at all. I have always liked the name. The only reason I haven't considered using it is because it is my mother's middle name (and she left a long time ago).

I agree that Diana is a bit fresher to most people... but you might already know that I prefer non-a endings, so I find Diane far more elegant and sophisticated than Diana.

Personally, Diane is one of those names that people forget about, but love when they hear it. So - I guess that fits the dated category, but when used it always seems fresh to me.
