[Surname] surname Thenebe
My surname at birth. I cannot find any information about this name. I think I am the last person to have been a Thenebe. I use a different last name now. I was told it was a French derivation of a German (Germanic) name. I was also told that the English derivation was Toynbee. Possibly it is one of those ellis Island name. I know nothing of my paternal grandfather's origins.
Any thought on the name I would appreciate. Wyncia

Thenebe and Thonebe are americanizations of the German name Thoenebe (now spelled Thönebe). A number of people with that name came though Ellis Island as you'll find at libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger. I don't know the origin of the name.
