[Opinions] Isabelle
I was told last night that my hubby likes the name Isabelle, while I like it, I also know that it is pretty popular (though not quite as much as Isabella, which strangely, I don't like much). However it does fit my "names that could have been used in the Middle Ages" thing I have. What are some good middle names that up the quirk factor for Isabelle? The only combo I've come up with is Isabelle Naomi (I really love Naomi's meaning), and I'm definitely up for less common names that that one. Also do you prefer the Scottish Isobel, or the French Isabelle? Do you like another variant better?General thoughts on the name?Edited: For punctuation errors, eek.

I can see no point in using a French spelling unless you, and others, are also going to use the French pronunciation.I far prefer Isobel to Isabelle. What about Isabel - that's also fine?Isobel Ruth
Isobel Clare
Isobel Janet
Isobel Marjorie
Isobel Cecily

A few responses down I said I didn't have a connection to Isabel, but I think that is changing... it's already growing on me.Isobel Ruth & Isobel Cecily are my favorites.Thank you!

I like Isabelle Marguerite - and I totally get your "names that could have been used in the Middle Ages" thing, though the following middles don't necessarily reflect that.Isabelle Charlotte
Isabelle Emmeline
Isabelle Helen
Isabelle Rosamond
Isabelle Ruth
Isabelle Serena
Isabelle Yolanda

I find Isabelle very beautiful. I prefer Isabel and Isobel, but Isabelle is also nice. Here's a combo for you: Isabelle Plaisance. Medieval as heck(she was a queen of Jerusalem I think) AND it means "pleasant". ...or, so I assume.Continuing on in that vein:Isabelle Amity
Isabelle Melisande
Isabelle Sibylla
Isabelle Alix, Isabelle Alice
Isabelle Philippa
Isabelle Lucia, Isabelle Lucy
Isabelle Constance
Isabelle Matilda, Isabelle Maude
Isabelle Marie - boring, yes. But it works so well! Maybe Isabelle Marie Louise or Isabelle Marie Therese? So pretty.

Oh thank you so much for this!Isabelle Matilda would combine our two favorite names, so I like that a lot.Isabelle Alice is standing out for me, too.Isabelle Marie Therese sounds like a French aristocrat of the time. Very pretty.

I prefer the Spanish, Isabel. Anything else is not for me.

I do like the simplicity of Isabel. Unfortunately, neither of us really have any Spanish heritage, so I find it harder to connect with, but I find it incredibly elegant.

Isobel Ginevra is a gem.I also really like Isobel Niamh, not sure the hubby would like the Celtic/Gaelic spelling, but it's worth a shot.

I really like Isobel, too, but for Americans I feel like Isabelle might be more of a natural go-to.
I really like Isabelle Gwendolen. Maelys and Mae- names in general are growing on me lately.Thank you.

General thoughts on the name, I don't like it at all. I find it heavy and clunky. I don't understand when people say that Isabelle or Isabella are "pretty pretty princess" because if I thought they were "pretty pretty princess" I would like them, as I like "pretty pretty princess" names. But a pretty pretty princess is the last thing I see in my mind's eye when I hear Isabelle or Isabella. Really not getting why Isabella is so popular. I know you asked about Isabelle and not Isabella, but to me they are basically one and the same so what goes for one goes for the other.

I understand your sentiment. What would you consider to be "pretty pretty princess" names?I like it more for the medieval, queenly connection, that's why I ask.

Victoria, Alexandra, Tatiana, Anastasia, Angelique, Octavia. And now I do see how Isabella fits into them in style, but it still just doesn't seem that way to me! Purely subjective reaction, of course.

I don't actually find those names 'pretty pretty princess' names at aLl, with the exception of Angelique.
I find them more stately/queenly than princessy.

I love Isabelle, and its popularity saddens me. I prefer Isabelle, I love French names and Isobel... I don't know... I've warmed to it recently, but it's still not my favourite name.
Isabelle Naomi is lovely! I do prefer Noémie, though. I'm not great at making combos / suggesting names based on other names in general, but here's my best shot:Isabelle Eléonore - I actually prefer this one the other way round, it's one of my top combos
Isabelle Freyja- love this spelling!
Isabelle Amaya- I love Isabelle Amy but it would be so common...
Isabelle Brook- used to find Brook tacky, but changed my mind after reading a book where it was used and now love it as a MN
Isabelle Jeanine- this name has been in my head a lot recently
Isabelle Nisha- Nisha is such a cute name, and I like the meaning
Isabelle Saffron- I haven't thought about this name for ages, it deserves more attention in my opinion
Isabelle Isolde- normally not a fan of alliteration but I think this is lovely
Isabelle Parvati- just popped into my head :)
Isabelle Iris- my cousins are considering this combo for their soon-expected baby
Isabelle Osanne- sounds gorgeous in a French accent!
Isabelle Frances- my sister's best friend, I complemented her parents on her name once and got very odd looksSorry, that's all I've got.
As for variants... I know an Ysabel, actually. At first I thought it tacky, but apparently it's their country's (Malta) variant. I don't know if that's correct, but I quite like it now.

I also like Ysabel, but it doesn't really fit with us culturally. :)Now I love II combos thanks to Isabelle Iris! So lovely... and I'm springboarding here and thinking, Isabelle Ivy.My favorite is Isabelle Freyja, though I tend to prefer Freja or Freya. Thank you!

Oh, Isabelle Ivy is lovely!

Isabelle Francesca is really spot on. Ophelia is also a name we've thought about, so that could work!
