[Opinions] Ruby
The Good: Ruby has been growing on me for some time now. I like its vintage nature, and I find it strong, like it has backbone, without being overbearing. I also get a vibrant and earthy vibe from it. Fittingly, it is red to me (deep red usually, although some names can brighten it). The Iffy: However, when I think of it as a stone name, it gets a bit cheesy and precious. It's also the surname of my aunt's husband, and therefore her and their two daughters. Additionally, I'm pretty sure it's the name my SIL considered for awhile if she ever had a girl. It was her grandmother's name or something. She had mixed feelings about using the name, but now, her third son will be coming any day and he's probably the last for them, so she probably will not have the opportunity to name a girl. (ETA: I would definitely talk to her were I at a point where I was seriously considering it for an actual child-on-the-way.)I'm starting to toy with the idea of adding it to my potentially-will-use name list. What are your thoughts on Ruby in general? What are your thoughts about using it in my situation? I came up with some combos today as well. Opinions and suggestions welcome as well!Ruby Winifred (I saw either this or the names swapped on here some time ago and fell in love.)

For some reason, I just can't like Ruby. I can't give you a reason why but given how much others seem to like the name, it's probably just my personal hang up lol. Anyway, I have heard of one instance where I liked it, Anna Ruby. It's the name of twin waterfalls in the state of Georgia. Very pretty.By the way, since you know your SIL wanted to use the name, talk to her about it. Tell her that you love the name and maybe even ask her blessing to use it since she has such a personal connection if you feel necessary.

Oh, yes, I definitely intend to talk to her should I ever feel there was a good possibility of using it. (Perhaps, I should have said.) Right now, I'm fond of it, but I wouldn't say I love it yet, and I have other names on my list that would come before it. I was just getting perspectives on it. I'll edit my post to better reflect that. Thanks for weighing in!

I like the name Ruby. It's pretty, and I can't think of anything to dislike about it, really. It is the name of a somewhat morally ambiguous demon character from the show 'Supernatural'. I don't think I've met or really seen/heard of anyone else with the name.If I were you, I'd probably ask the SIL if it was okay with her that I use the name. If she's for sure not having more kids, I can't imagine her minding, but if she's still considering maybe possibly having another baby in the future, she might still feel attached to the name. Can't hurt to ask, right? Better than hurt feelings or whatever.Of your combos, I like:Ruby Winifred
Ruby Winifred Claire
Ruby Claire JosephineOther suggestions:Ruby Catherine
Ruby Marcella
Ruby Ava Irene
Ruby Hope
Ruby Ariana Jane
Ruby Anne
Ruby Cordelia Grace

Ruby also the name of a minor, one episode character in Firefly, a little girl gone mute in a village of Christian "hillfolk". Not why I like the name, but that's one of my geeky associations. ;)I would definitely talk to my SIL if there ever were a chance for me to use it. As it is, it's third or fourth in line for me, at best. I just wanted to get some feedback before I got too attached to the idea.Ruby Catherine is nice! Catherine is a family name for me.

I remember that girl! Just didn't remember her name. I was going to say, "That was a good episode," but that's a bit redundant considering the show we're discussing. ;)

I think you may have seen Ruby Winifred from me :) It's one of my favorite combos. Obviously I'm biased towards Ruby Winifred, which I think is bold and wonderfully clunky on it's own. Paired with Winifred, it seems a bit too heavy to tie it down with another middle name. I like Ruby Margaret too. I think it does the best with only one middle name, but I like Margaret Della and Zelda Margaret as well!

I knew I saw it somewhere around these parts. Yes, it must have been you. I can't remember when I started thinking about Ruby or Winifred, but it may very well have been after I saw the post on them in combination. Winifred is now one of my favorites, so thanks for possibly influencing me. Heh.I kind of agree that Ruby sounds best with one middle. I was just trying to match numbers with my #1 girls' combo: Cordelia Edith Jane. (I do legitimately like some of the three name combos for it though.)Bold is a good word to describe Ruby. I kind of worry too that Ruby might be too bold next to Cordelia actually. Winifred is actually my next runner. Cordelia and Winifred. *happy sigh* But my BF isn't sold on Winifred. He is open to Ruby though.

Oooh, Cordelia Edith Jane is really lovely! Cordelia and Winifred would make such a lovely sib set, but I think Cordelia and Ruby could work too! The more I think about it, the more I like Ruby Winifred Louise, I think that's a strong combo that matches with your Cordelia combo as well.

I worry about the cutesy factor with Ruby, so it's good to hear that the combo balances it some. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Ruby was my fave girl name for years and the name I wanted to use for a future DD. Ruby Mae was the combo I wanted to go with, but when I met my DH, he already had a niece named Ruby! She just turned 10 years old last month, so needless to say, it's a name I will sadly never have the opportunity to use. I think it's such a beautiful, classic and feminine name, with great spunk. I would encourage anyone to use it! Tbh I don't like any of your combos as they are, but I would like Ruby Zelda, Ruby Della, Ruby Claire (though I would prefer Clara), Ruby Louise (though I would prefer Louisa) and Ruby Josephine.

I'm not actually sold on all of my combos either. It's just the one combination we've agreed on for our number 1 girls' name has two middles, so I was trying to match it. I prefer it with only one middle sometimes too.

I like Ruby, however at first I just see my friend's dog (I haven't met a person named Ruby yet), but I think it's a really cute name. I don't really have any type of experience with your situation, but I would probably consider using it. Ruby Winifred is lovely! I usually don't like Winifred, but I love this combo. I like all the other combos except Ruby Zelda Margaret (doesn't flow for me). Other Combos (using your pnl):
Ruby Cordelia
Ruby Imogen
Ruby Louise

Cordelia is actually my #1 name, and my boyfriend has agreed to it as a first in another combination. My first choice for a second girl would be Winifred, but my boyfriend isn't sold. However, he did just ask me if he could pick a second boy's name if he gave me Ruby. Still, I would have to talk to several family members about their feelings if an opportunity to use it ever arose.Ruby Imogen intrigues me. The red of Ruby takes on a sparkle next to the white light of Imogen. Ruby Louise is kind of nice too, in a more understated kind of way.
