Only a few months after Sofia and Carina came home, Natasha was surprised to find out she was expecting again. They had agreed no more children, but life is funny in the way that you can't always predict it. The girls were all thrilled to be getting a baby sibling. And they were all pleased that there was no internal longing for a daughter anymore. They would be happy with any child they were blessed with. However, Natasha wasn't happy at all when there were complications and she was put on bedrest for the final three and a half months.
Steven and James were sure she had never been quite so moody and they did their best to handle everything they could on their own. They had never quite realized how difficult Natasha's day to day life must be with so many children.
When Maximilian was born, Natasha wanted more than anything to see the baby she'd had to be so careful to protect, but she only got a few seconds with him before he was whisked away to the NICU. He stayed there for almost a month on respirators as everyone waited for his lungs to be able to work well enough on their own.
"Was I like that?" Jules asked one day, looking through the plastic side of the incubator at his little brother.
"Yes, you were," Steven replied, hugging his son to his side. "And we were terrified something would happen to you."
"I get worried about him," Julius admitted, hiding behind the dirty blond hair hanging in his face.
"He's going to be okay," Steven promised. "He's going to come home very soon. You'll see."
But later when the children were gone, their parents all sat by little Maxim's bedside and were quiet.
"I can't do this again," Steven said quietly. "I tell the kids he'll be fine and then sit here and hope I'm not lying to them."
Hey," James said and reached out to put a comforting hand on Steven's knee. "He'll get better."
"I was sick the majority of my childhood," Steven replied a bit bitterly.
"But none of the children are," Natasha interjected. "So if Maxim is, we'll get through it. We'll be there for him."
Steven nodded and they all kept silent watch over their son until visiting hours were over.
