I think if a man goes by Josey he better be an outlaw. lol Kind of like Rosey Grier; big as he is, and sure of himself as he is, who was going to laugh to his face about being called Rosey, or writing a how-to guide on macrame/needlepoint? (His real name is Roosevelt.)
I think Joseph and Josephine probably co-existed for a very long time, but that Josie was probably always much more popular as a nn or full name for girls. Your TV Josey and the movie character are the only males I know of who use that name.
I'd much rather see Joe for a Joseph; I always liked Joe, have known lots of them and it's such a capable, no-nonsense name.
Come to think of it, I prefer Jo over Josie on a girl for that same reason. Josie kind of sounds a bit spunky, but also frumpy.
