What language or cultural background? One possible explanation is that is it is shortened from the surname Rivinus (or Rivinius) that is a humanist latinsation of the German surname Bachmann (see, e.g., https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Quirinus_Rivinus )There is also a plant named Rivina (after the above mentioned botanist). A plant name gives a girl's name, and a masculine form derived from Rivina brings us to Rivin.

It’s a surname in my family tree. Supposedly, the first Rivinius from eastern Bavaria owner the local
Paper and latinized his name to sound more scholarly. He was a Christian. It was originally Rivinovich or Rivenich. It supposedly means river valley. The area they came from in Bavaria was a big valley with river so....
7 Rivinius males left Germany. The Christian Rivinius went to Russia under Catherine the great and were murdered door to door during the Russian Revolution and ethnic cleansing.
The 2 Catholic Rivinius families moved to America at the same time as the others left for Russia and again split between catholic and Christian.
That’s all I have. Odds are if your last name is riviniu S you are directly related to other Rivinius as it was a purposeful alteration of another name.
