When Andreas's mother passed away, he had no relatives or family friends to take care of him. Nicolas felt responsible, even though it isn't his son. Neither he or Katerina wanted, or felt like they could, adopt him. However, Nicolas's brother and his wife found out they couldn't have children on their own a while ago They decided to adopt Andreas, who now is a part of the Royal Family.
Not long after the adoption, Queen Katerina found out she was pregnant. She told Nicolas right away and he was - of course - overjoyed and very proud. Katerina didn't have an easy pregnancy though. She had a very bad headache, nausea and felt very weak. Nicolas and the doctors helped her every way that they could to help her. Three months before the due that, Katerina was diagnosed with preeclampsia which got worse by the day. A few weeks later, their baby girl was born prematurely. The girl was very small and weak, and for a while the doctors wasn't sure if she would survive. Eventually she began to recover - to blossom - and for that reason the royal couple decided to name their beloved daughter Thalia.
