I think it was a boy name to begin with but I much prefer it on girls. It might work as a middle name if you plan on his going by his first name. Either way, be prepaired for some mild teasing if using for a real person.

I think Mallory sounds long-faced and dull on either sex. The only reason it ever worked for a girl IMO is the rhyme with Valerie in an American accent. In my mind (not when I meet someone with these names), Madison and Mallory go together, as they are both missed jokes made by the entertainment industry.

Actually, yeah, I think it could. It sort of feels like Emery and Avery to me. I would never have the guts to use it as a first name, but middle name? No problems here. Jack Mallory, by the way, is pretty rad.

I think Mallory could work as a middle name. I associate it too much with females for it to be used as a first name. The only downside to it being a middle name is that it reads as a surname, which it was used as originally before becoming a given name,

I don't. Just 'Mal' for a boy or some other 'Mal' starting name would have be convinced. I mean I don't even care for Mallory all that much but I just can't fanthom it used on a boy, sorry.

I am a big supporter of boys names on boys, Evelyn, Meredith, Ashley, etc. My partner has a typically feminine name and he has never had any problem with it, nor have any of the male Ashley's, Madison's, Gale's, Kelly's, or Courtney's I am all for taking back boys names.

That said, Mallory is an awful name for either gender in my opinion. It's commonly thought to mean "unfortunate" it's shortened to Mal "bad", it brings to mind ducks and it's just plain ugly.

I've always liked this more as a boy's name, despite going to high school with a girl named Mallory, so I don't see why not.

No, it missed that chance. It was hardly heard of at all as a first name before the eighties sitcom Family Ties, with its female character Mallory Keaton.
