in the Kingdom of EgremontIeuan had kept his word to his brother: While he had carried on his affair with Lady Sigrun over the years, he had done so very discreetly. When Sigrun inevitably fell pregnant and was delivered of a healthy boy, only Tristan and Ieuan knew the child's true paternity. Sigrun's husband, Duke Hallbjörn, was none the wiser -- and, in fact, he ordered a lavish feast to be held to honor the gods who had finally blessed him with a legitimate heir in his old age. The knowledge that his son would be raised in a faraway land by another man left Ieuan distraught, and so Tristan named him the duke's Master of Arms and arranged a marriage for him in Hallbjörn's own household -- a young scullery maid befitting of Ieuan's illegitimate status. The match came with a caveat, however: Ieuan had to end things with Lady Sigrun; the possibility of being discovered, especially now that there was a child (and an ally's ostensible heir, no less!) involved, was too great.Ieuan's sorrow at being parted from his love was tempered by the immense joy of two more sons born to the Argall-Jasso line. Princess Eira and her husband Titus welcomed their third, Silvanus, though both were caught off-guard as all of the royal physicians had assured them the child was to be a girl. And finally, on the very last day of the year, Queen Étaín gave birth to the long-awaited heir, Crown Prince Madoc.
