It's popular where I live, but not excessively so. Not a problem there. I like both Daniel and nn Dan very much; Danny is appalling but avoidable.
Given another son, I'd have campaigned vigorously for Daniel Thomas, after DH's grandfather and mine. But, in DH's family there used to be a tradition of using an H name as the fn and then Daniel as a mn, and using Daniel. So, that would be a problem! We like three given names, but finding a suitable H name is a stretch. I'd go the Hugo route, or even Hugh since it wouldn't be used out loud (some people here can't tell the difference between Hugh and you, which can make conversations interesting), but I don't know any good alternatives, including the ones used in the family - Horace, Harold and Hilton. So, Hugo Daniel Thomas, known as Daniel or Dan! Oh yes.
