It's reaallly hillbilly to me. As bad as Jethro or Fairlight.
It seems pretty on paper, but spoken aloud I think it's ugly. And it gives me a rhinestone feeling ... like Ruby, it wants to be fine and exotic and expensive but comes across sort of mediocre and superficial. It's kind of like April that way, only it's uglier IMO.
I don't mean I think it's a bad name. It's not; it's alright. I just dislike it.

Out of curiosity, have you seen a nice quality white fire opal in person? I find them lovely. They aren't diamonds or emeralds to be sure but, for me, they're a far cry from "rhinestone", "mediocre" and "superficial". YMMV, of course.
Your Opal Euphemia combo is quite elegant. :)
P.S. I get that you don't care for the sound/feel of the name; not arguing that with you. Just interested in how some others here seem to perceive the stone itself.

Opals are my favorite gemstone, but I agree with mirfak about the name.
It's pretty in theory, but the sound reminds me of 'offal' when spoken aloud.

Yes, I have, they're extremely nice. My grandma - born in 1913 - wore a lot of nice opal jewelry. I think it was sort of early-20th-century trendy. The stone, I mean, as well as the name.
It's not that I think opal is tacky. It's that the name seems that way to me. Opal is to the 1910s what Amber is to the 1980s. Almost exactly. It even has a similar clunk to the sound (in my accent these names come out Ohpull and Amburr).
Now that I think about it ... I feel like all gem names are kinda tacky bling-names, and the only ones I like are Diamond (because it's abstractly symbolic of hardness/long life/protection, and also has sounds I associate with names Diana, Raymond) and Emerald (because the word sounds like all the emma names). But they're GPs.
Opal Rosetta came to mind.

I've got a white opal necklace that's been in the family since before the First World War, and yes, it is lovely. But I dislike gem names in general; can't think of one that I'd use unless you count Coralie (but not Coraline or Coral). Opal wants to be a joke or cartoon name - Olive Oyl, Opal Otter, Pearl Persimmon, that kind of thing.
Ah, I see. Wish I still had my opal necklace. My grandpa was a rock hound; cut, polished and set stones himself and made it for me. It was small but really beautiful. Miscreants who burgled my house absconded with it.
Opal's cool. It's more grown-up than Ruby, more youthful than Pearl, more unusual than Amber, more classy than Jade, more down-to-earth than Amethyst.

I love Opal. It's so rich, creamy, and weird.
Once upon a time I came up with the combo Opal Jamesina and really liked that. Still pretty good, I think.
Other ideas:
Opal Abigail / Abigail Opal
Emily Opal
Opal Amelia
Millicent Opal
Evelyn Opal
Vivian Opal
Opal Miranda
Miriam Opal
Opal Johanna
Genevieve Opal
Opal just has so much personality! I adore it.

I hate this name. Hate it. It's old, ugly, dated and deserves to die along with Ethel.
Hehe. I can't offer help for Ethel; I respect the name but don't love the sound or definitive old lady vibe. However, I wonder if you've seen a nice quality white fire opal in person (pics online don't quite do them justice); they are really lovely and, for me, that imagery easily overrides "old lady", just a gemstone/nature name, suitable for any age. :)
Opal is not a name I have thought much about. I don't think I really consider it a name. For a middle name it would be best to avoid ones that can also be words.

Remembrance Opal is all kinds of kooky Puritan-Victorian fun!
I love Opal. The only reason I wouldn't use it is because my dad is "Opa". I know a little Opal and her big sister is Sloane, which isn't a very good pairing IMO, but I suppose they both have short spunky sounds.

I love all of these combos! They seem very sweetly vintage.
