Other than the suggestions in the responses previous to mine, a potential nickname that came to mind immediately was Ned. I think it is strong and endearing, and works well as a diminutive for many, many names.Nat is also possible, though it isn't my personal favorite. Other ones that are a bit less direct, but perhaps usable, are Ash, Kit, Moe, Oz, Ozzie, Ray, and Vin.

Where are you getting those NNs from? How does Ash or Vin or even Oz/Oziie work for Ronan? I guess I can see where Moe and Kit could be unrelated pet names but the others make no sense to me

I said that they were less direct. Nicknames don't always have to make sense, in my opinion; there could be the faintest of relation to a legal name, or none at all. I looked at Ronan, and wrote down the nicknames that immediately came to mind -- even though several of them were dramatic stretches. Ash came from the second syllable of Ronan. Vin, also, from the second "-nan" syllable. Oz and Ozzie are both playful to me, and are casual enough to be included, from my perspective; or as "unrelated pet names," as you called Moe and Kit. Ray is a step from the first half of "Ro-," seen with a different stress.

I guess I just feel like if you're going to go with a "less direct" nickname is has to come out naturally from the bestower, not from a 2nd or 3rd party. I can see how Ozzie may be casual enough to use like "Buddy" but I'm just having a really hard time seeing how Ash and Vin correlate at all- especially is they are supposedly pulled from the same part of the name, because they have absolutely no sounds in common to my ear. That said I think Rin / Ren could work beautifully.

Do you have a MN picked out? That could open options up a bit. Otherwise I'd go with Roan. It's the only one that makes sense to me and sounds the best by far, imo

Ro or Ron are obvious, as is Ronnie, Ronny, Roan. Um, Nan? Nancy… yeah, maybe not. Nando. Ran. Raan. Roar. Roel. Roi, Roy. Rolo, Rollo. Roly. Roni. Ronne. Roo. Rory.

Umm, I'll try to add a bit on Mireio's suggestions.Nory
Rory
Roly (I've known a Ronald nn'd Roly, pretty ridiculous but was endearing)
Rono (like Ron-O)Nan and Nanny are great pestering and/or tough love nicknames, but I'm just being silly.
