To me they are almost two different names.
Kelan looks like it could be pronounced
Keelan or Kaylan. Kellan is clearly rhymed with the first part of
Melanie. So I prefer Kellan, but only because the prn is unambiguous... the two spellings are about equally appealing to me.
Kelan looks more masculine and balanced.
There's a Kellan in my daughter's fourth grade who is quite short in stature and is also the most popular boy in the class, according to her. I think it's a pretty hip name ... like
Aidan before it was, you know. Aydens all over.
