[Opinions] Colin/Collin
Do you think the spelling of Colin/Collin changes its pronunciation? For example, if you were looking for the Caul-in pronunciation and not the Coal-in pronunciation, what spelling would you use?
Replies
I pronounce both CAUL-in.
This probably isn't very helpful but, in Australia, we would never say Caul-in, no matter how you spelled the name. I like Colin though =)
How would you say it? I have only heard Caul-in and Coal-in.
I think Collin looks better but both ways are supposed to be pronounced KAHL-in.
I don't think the spelling changes the pronunciation
Collin looks like the ln Collins after an s-job. It doesn't happen where I live, though there are quite a few Colin people around, not all of them grandfathers. Until General Powell became a world figure, I'd never heard either one pronounced as Coal-in, and it still seems very strange and counter-intuitive. So, here in South Africa the spelling doesn't matter; elsewhere, I suppose it would be more logical to use a double consonant to indicate a shorter preceding vowel, but there isn't that much logic available to the general public, so probably anything goes.
Well, to make absolute sure that the name was pronounced like Collins, I'd use two l's. Colin I have never really liked precisely because it's impossible to know how it is pronounced, because both ways are accepted, and the one way sounds like colon.
Funny thing is, Colin Powell is supposed to be pronounced CAUL-in, but lots of people mispronounced it in his life, so he gave up and went with COAL-in. But that's not really the correct pronunciation of his name.

Right, well I assume you mean CAH-lin. The word caul I pronounce CAWL. So I'm not sure if you're saying CAW-lin or you pronounce caul like CAHL. Either way must be an accent difference. I've never heard CAW-lin, if that's what you're going for. :)

In my accent, CAH-lin and CAWL-in are the same. "call" and "caul" are pronounced the same.
