[Opinions] Merit
What do you think of the name Merit for a boy?I like it on both a boy or a girl, really, but Merit on a boy sounds nice to me. There aren't enough male virtue names, in my opinion, and I think it'd be nifty with the nickname Merry. It sounds shiny and golden to me, like a gold star, and Merry is nice and green to me.What would be some good middle names be?Array

I rather like this name, after seeing it in my yearbook. It was a girl with the name, but I quite like it for both genders. Probably wouldn't use it myself, but it's still nice.

At my school we have a program(that I am in) for the "Gifted & Talented" student. The name of the program is 'M.E.R.I.T' aka Merit
So I wouldn't name MY child Merit only because of the association I have with it. But it is pretty although I prefer it spelt Meritt-looks fuller somehow to me:/Elizabeth

It sounds better on a boy ... And it's growing on me :-)

Oh, I love it. It reminds me of Emmett or Eliot. I agree, why do girls get saddled with all the virtues? (Though the idea of a female Chastity... O.o) It's a lot better than other popular -ett names like Beckett or Bennett, which are too surnamy for me.

its not too bad if paired with a strong male middle name
Though I prefer Virtue names as middle names even on girls

It's stupid.

Why? I'm glad to hear that you don't like it, actually, but I'd like to know why, to make sure there aren't any really bad associations that I don't know about.Array

Ooooh...Definitely digging Merit Augustus, Merit Julius, and Merit Leopold! Very, very dignified sounding. I'm starting to think that three-syllable middle names go VERY well with this, heh.How does Merit Abraham sound? Is it too much a clash of sounds?Array

I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the right person it could definitely grow on me. I think it could as a nn for Meredith too.

Hm, I ran across this one too, just yesterday!Well, you and I both adore those Mer- names on boys.. and this is no exception. I like the clipped sound of it, and the frank virtue meaning. It works well on a girl, also.Only problem that might stop me from using it (if there were no names I liked even better) is, the word "merit" is politically loaded - "merit-based hiring & admissions" being a phrase I hear tossed around a lot.I like the sound of Merry too, though I'd probably not have people call him that till the boy was old enough to carry it with some bluster.MNs:
Merit Valentino
Merit Dara (the star meaning?)
Merit Caspar
Merit Janus
Merit Laurence
Merit Evander
Merit Ivor
Merit Percival
Merit Leif
Merit Jude
Merit Zane

Oooh...I'm really liking Merit Janus. I love Janus and Janis both (Janus for a boy and Janis for a girl, natch), and it would make a very nifty middle name.Thank you for the suggestions! I'm digging a lot of them--Merit Janus just stuck out at me as rocking. I think Merit Dara sounds great, too, though that'd be a combo I'd probably use on a girl, heh. :)Array
