[Opinions] Ditty
I heard the nickname 'Ditty' used today. What girls name could it be a nickname for? My only thought is Dorothy.

It's probably just an affectionate nickname rather than an actual diminutive.

Oy vey. There is a Danish name Ditte, which is short for either Edith or Dorothea. But Ditty sounds really bad. Like "ditto" or "ditsy". Plus it rhymes with t*tty.

Afroditi? Yehudit? Perdita?
It's probably Jane.

My son calls my SIL that. Her nickname which he hears MIL call her is "Sissy". Ditty is about how close his toddler talk gets right now, so to me it feels a bit babyish. Other ideas...Dierdre
Demetria
DianthaIt also reminds me of "ditties" for military drill. At least in the Marine Corps they make people use certain phrases while learning to drill to make a a verbal connection with the movements.

Perhaps Dittany? Or, I was at school with a German girl named Editha (eDEEta) whose nn was Ditty. I don't know if it was just a school nn or if it was used in the rest of her life.

I can kind of see it as a sort of baby-talk nn for Elizabeth, and maybe even for Katherine. Katherine only because when I was very little, just learning to talk, I called kitty-cats ditty-dats. One of my uncles liked this so much he started calling kittens dittens.

I was thinking baby talk as well. If that's the case it could really be a nickname for anything. Presumably with a D or a T sound in the name but not necessarily. My aunt had difficulty with speech as a child and called herself Doddie (for Leslie).

I know a little girl ...Named Penelope, and though she can say it now, when she was first talking she couldn't manage Penelope and what she ended up saying sounded like Ralphie, and for a long time her family even called her that.
They should have called her Penny.

Dorothy or Edith are most likely. Deirdre, which is pronounced DEER-dra, might be another more modern suspect.Other possibilities
Danette / Danita
Danuta
Delta
Demeter / Demetra
Desiderata
Destiny
Damhnait
Diamante / Diamond
Diantha
Dietlinde
Domitilla
Donata / Donatella
Dorit
Dorita

Dolene and Darlene.

It might not be a nickname for anything. My dad calls me by a nickname that has nothing to do with my name. It happens.

I had an aunt Pat, whose name was actually Elsie. Reason why? Lost in the mists of time. Aaaand..my cousin , Patrica, is named for our aunt Pat.
