Help[Opinions] Spider & Piers
My husband and I jokingly asked my daughter what she would name a brother. She replied "Spider," as she's a big Spiderman fan at the moment. I then gave her a list of names for the middle and she chose Piers.
While I obviously wouldn't name my child Spider I'm surprised it hasn't shown up. I hear so many animal names and off-beat names, Spider would fit right in.
Also, thoughts on Piers? I like it, but we wouldn't use it. We're big sci-fi / fantasy nerds in the house and Piers is connected too closely to Piers Anthony for my liking.
The moral of Pete's story is: No matter what you step in, keep walking along and singing your song... because it's all good.

I think Spider carries too many other connotations besides Spiderman. Same way Snake or Bat or Eel does. I think Spiderman fans would be more likely to use Peter or Parker than Spider. The animal names you usually see are softer with nicer symbolism or imagery (Fawn, Dove, Robin, Lark, Wren) or tougher and more noble symbolism (Bear, Leo). Then you get some weird off-beat ones like Elsie Otter but even that has super cute imagery to me because I love otters even though I know they aren't that sweet IRL.
Spider sounds like a gang nickname or criminal names. Spiders are small, can be squashed, "sneaky", long spindly legs, and hurt people by not being noticed. I'm someone who actually likes spiders a lot but I don't think it would be a good name!

I don't think many people actually like spiders so I'm going to guess that's why you don't see it unlike Fox, Griffin, Wren, etc. Piers is ok; I can take it or leave it.

Interesting choice. :) A quick check of the UK birth records lists one person called Spider, and she's female! This is surprising.
I like Piers; one-syllable names with good history are usually appealing to me. Never heard of Piers Anthony.

Spider is a fun nickname, but as someone's real name it would try way too hard. Like, harder than Fox (which is a GP of mine). We're talking Maverick territory.
As for Piers, I suspect I'd like it more if it weren't for Piers Morgan.

I like Piers a lot - OK, I did name my own son Peter, not because of Spidey but for personal reasons. Piers doesn't seem to happen where I live, which is a pity. I suspect it might be a 70s name in the UK, for what that's worth. Oh, and Americans seem to pronounce it like Pierce, with an s therefore instead of a z, which I don't enjoy.

Piers is okay. It's better than Spider, but that isn't saying anything much.
Spider is more like a nn somebody earns, because they're very skinny and long-legged or they're sly or something. Not like animal names like Robin or Fawn, more like ones like Weasel or Possum.

I would think Spider would appeal to hipsters or comic-book nerds. It's "bad-ass"
I've seen and heard so many ridiculous names that it really wouldn't surprise me at all to meet a Spider. And I can totally see the parents who would use such a name.

I feel like there is always a baddie in cheesy movies called Spider who has a spiderweb tattoo. Did he get the nickname first or the tattoo? Who knows.
Piers is nice, not really to my taste, but there is nothing wrong with it. It makes me think of Piers Morgan.

I can't remember his full name, but I remember hearing a security expert of some kind interviewed on CNN several times who was introduced as " ... James "Spider" Lastname."
