So, DH suggested Thane repeatedly during the last month of my last pregnancy. I nixed it right off because it seems a bit like Earl or Royal to me which I've never liked. One of those names that's meant to look posh, but completely misses the mark.

Since then though it's been growing on me. It's one syllable, and while it's different it's not difficult to spell or pronounce.

Thoughts? Combos? Middle name or GP only?

Interesting you think it seems posh, I think it seems very down-to-earth and country. I'd lump it in with things like Wesley and Jackson, except it has the bonus of not being trendy. I think in the right combo I could like it even.

When I mentioned Royal and then it reminded of Royal Wilder (Almanzo Wilder's brother) and I thought about the vibe being more what you describe.

Royal Wilder is why I like the name Royal, but it probably wouldn't do well IRL. :)

I don't associate the name Thane with the old English title because it's never used anymore! So from that respect it's nothing like Earl or Princess IMO.

I don't like the look of Thane but it has a really appealing sound, if I were to chose a spelling I'd rather go for Thayne.

Atticus Thane, Tennyson Thane, and Thane Harrison are awesome.

I'm not sure about varying the spelling as it is a word name to me.

I've known a couple, like maybe 4 or 5? It's a bit meh for my liking and I know some people REALLY struggle to say it. One of the kids named Thane had a speech impediment so it was hard for him to say it.

I'd go first name perhaps.

I'm surprised to hear you've known so many! I wonder if it's more common in Australia than it would be in the US. Good point on pronunciation.

Thane Ezekiel is incredible. I also like Thane Philip, Maxwell Thane, and Henry Thane.

I think that it's terrible as a first name, and I agree that it sounds like Earl or Royal or Prince.

I like it as a first or a middle name. Yet, why not for a girl--especially if connotations of titular royalty pervade among common association. Interestingly, as I read my own suggestions, I pronounced "Thane" as though it were still a prefixed title.

I don't mind it in theory but when I say it aloud, it sounds like Shane with a lisp. I actually like it way better than Shane but Shane is more common :(

I knew a few boys named Shane, when I was a child..the local pronounciation was usually Chane (chain,as in something gold or silver you'd wear around you neck).

I don't know about this name. It seems very fantasy-ish, unless that's what you're going for.
Once I had a grim reaper character named Thane as in Thanatos.

I immediately think of Macbeth: "No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive
Our bosom interest: go pronounce his present death,
And with his former title greet Macbeth." So, to me, it seems like a title and is therefore strange as a name.

All things considered, I don't think it's a terrible name. It's certainly unusual and using titles as names is a common practice as well.

I have an inkling Macbeth is connected to his liking of it. He did his honors thesis in college on Macbeth. I can't decide how much that aspect puts me off

I like it on paper but IRL I would never name a boy that. It's too lispy. Other Th names aren't - Thaddeus, Theron, Thor - but Thane and Theodore sound lispy to me. I also agree that it seems to aim for a noble character and comes off ... not the opposite, but more streety. That's not a bad thing in my book, but it is a thing.

It is alright, doesn't do much for me! I think similar names like Thorne or Thaddeus, stand out more but that just my opinion!
