Agnes!I also love Avis. Ava needs to be retired.

How are you pronouncing Agnes? The English way or as they do in France, more like Ann yez? I like the second better.Dislike Ava very much.

Ava, no contest!Agnes makes me want to scrunch my nose in disgust lol

None really. Ava is so boring and Agnes brings bad memories for me. But I'd say Agnes.

Honestly, I would probably go with Ava because I like it a bit more, but would be really upset that its so overused. Can I fudge and go with Avabel? Agnes is nice, and I would love to see it on someone else's kid, but I can't actually see myself using it in real life.

Ava, definitiely!

AgnesAva is overused.

AgnesAva is very pretty too but Agnes is more unusual.

Ava.I don't dislike Agnes, but I could never give a real baby girl that name. And I know people say Ava is super popular, but I never hear it where I live. And it's pretty and simple and timeless.
vote up1
Both are lovely names, but I prefer Ava, even if it is more popular.

I'd choose Ava, unless I could say Agnes with a French pronounciation, it sounds quite nice, then.

Hmmm. Tough one. Ava is overused. Agnes is ugly but I have a soft spot for it due to it being the name of my grandmother. Okay, saying Ava.

Ava ...Ava is a cute classic. Agnes is old and horrible, I hope it never makes a comeback.
vote up1
AgnesI love it, I think it's very sweet.

Agnes, actually. This may be the first day I ever would answer that way. But I just like Ava less and less all the time. Not sure I could handle 'Aggie' as a nickname, but Agnes nn 'Nessie' or even 'Essie' would be okay by me.
vote up1
Ness and Nessie are cute nns. Agnes having cute nns definitely makes me reconsider choosing Ava. Makes it a much tougher choice.

Agnes..I love the name Agnes and dislikes the name Ava.

AvaI'd choose Ava because I don't care for Agnes.I was going to say that I like Agatha and Agate more than Agnes but after saying them out loud Agnes is probably my favorite Ag- name. I have to admit the Ag- part of these names is harsh and a bit unpleasant. It reminds me of the words agony, agriculture, and gag.Ava is very pretty and I like the sound even if the name isn't quite my style. It is very popular which is another reason that I wouldn't normally choose it. But between Ava and Agnes, Ava definitely wins inspite of its popularity.

Changed my mind...I'm going to choose Agnes. I dislike how popular Ava is and I dislike that its only good nn Avie / Avy is not actually any shorter.Even though Agnes is not my favorite I like it more than I initially thought especially since Ness and Nessie are such cute nns.I'm leaving my initial choice response because what I said about Agnes still stands even though I'd choose it over Ava.

Yay, welcome to the dark side!
One less hypothetical Ava is better for all of us. :)

This is a random name story. I have only ever met one Agate and he is the half brother to an old friend of my sister. He has a sister named Amethyst. His much older half siblings are Kiara and Shadirah. Amethyst and Agate have the same father but their siblings have different fathers.I have never knowingly met an Agnes before. I think I've met an Agatha.

"I have never knowingly met an Agnes' lol. That seems funny to me because I have three aunt Agneses on my side of the family. And then there is an Aunt Agnes in my husband's family. Plus I met at least 3 young ladies named Agnes in my semester of university in Lithuania. Plus I worked with an Agnieszka at daycare. Wow. That seems ridiculous when I write it out.

That's a lot of Agnes. I don't have an Agnes in my family that I remember from our genealogy. My husband and I both have a great grandma Maud / Maude. Though his great grandma went by her middle name Nancy because she hated Maude. I also have a great grandma Ella, an Elizabeth who went by Betty, and a Maria / Mary who was born Maria but went by Mary around gringos.Mar- names are probably the closest in my family to Agnes in yours. I think Maria's mother was also Maria. My nana went by Marian but was born Mariana. She had a sister Maria and a sister Marie. My nana had a daughter Mary who is my favorite aunt. Then my mother chose Marisa for me and my father agreed to it. My mother uses both Marisa pronunciations for me.On my husband's side there isn't an Agnes either. Other than Nancy / Maude there is a great grandma Elise but everyone hated her. She was just an aweful human being who constantly played mind games and beat her children including her two disabled sons. She was a very mean and very rich woman who never wanted children so she mostly let nannies raise them. It was a family tradition to name the first born daughter Elise and my mother-in-law was the first one in generations to not be named Elise. Even if I loved the name Elise I'd never use it because of the terrible association my husband's family has with it.

This is a tough one. I prefer Agnes to the overly popular Ava, but I think a young girl would rather be named Ava than Agnes. So I'd choose Agnes hypothetically, but I'd really use Ava.

AgnesOkay, it's not my favourite name, but hearing it on a 'child' on Despicable Me helped make it more accessible to me. I probably like Ava more, but it's so popular I don't think I could actually use it. I can learn to love Agnes, but all the other Avas would still prey on my mind.

AvaAgnes is just so ugly. I don't like the sound of the -gn- or the -s. Reminds me of agonies. If it were pronounced Ahn-yes it would not be so bad and might be better than Ava. But it's not.
