Help[Opinions] love the full name, hate the nickname
Do you have any names where you love the full name, but hate the obvious nickname? Would you use the name anyway?
Mine are
Anthony (I hate Tony)
Aurora (I hate Rory)
Robert (I hate Bob)
Amelia & Amity (I hate Amy)
Laurence (I hate Larry)
I might use Robert or Laurence, because I'm not sure Bob and Larry would be givens, and they have other good nicknames (I like Rob and Lance). I just can't bring myself to seriously consider Anthony or Aurora though, because of the nicknames. I just couldn't stand it if my kid went by Tony or Rory. :P

I would probably use all these names as MN. I would consider Violet as a FN because I'm not convinced that everyone would shorten it to Vi.

I actually like a lot of nns and there's quite a few that I almost prefer to the name!
But here's a few names that have stumped me as far as nns to use:
Francesca - wouldn't use Fran / Frannie or Cesca, and definitely not Fanny
Victoria - wouldn't use Vicki and Tori is cute but not solid enough
Sebastian - Seb? No thanks. Sebby? Weird. Bastian I guess could work though.

Seffy is the only one I've heard (my bff's sister in law is Persephone). So ugly!

Ditto for Anthony / Antony. Didn't know people used Amy as a nickname for Amelia (feels like a waste).
For me, the big two are James & Gabriella. James is such a good, strong name; Jamie is all right, not terribly offensive but nms either; but Jim / Jimmy doesn't even sound real. It's a giant, mush-mouthed schwa. How it survived as a legitimate name, I'll never know.
And Gabriella... I can't think of another name that is so beautiful on its own, but whose nickname is an actual (negative) epithet. Granted, "gabby" isn't a common insult, but it's still in use.
EDIT: Totally forgot Madeleine for a second. Madeleine is lovely, but "Maddy" is... well, Mad.

The only one that immediately comes to mind is Candace. I really hate the nn Candy, and it really does seem almost inevitable.
However, I would point out that at least in the US, Amy is strictly a full name and not a nn. In fact, it would be considered pretty odd if an Amelia or an Amity went by Amy.
I'd also say that Lance as a nn for Lawrence is a stretch. Lances are just Lance.

Several Amy's I've known had full names but never went by them. I didn't even lnow they had longer names for a long time. At least one was an Amelia. I am in the US.
I know 2 Lances. One is just Lance, the other is Laurence. Though in truth, Laurence may well not be shortened at all.

August immediately sprung to my head. It's my #1 boys' name ATM but he would never, ever, ever be called "Gus".
Thomas- I love Thomas but hate "Tom". I'd still use it though cos I have known two guys called Thomas that went solely by "Thomas".
Elwood- It's a GP name anyway but I can't think of anything nice to shorten it to- "Woody"? Yeah, totally won't get teased. "El"? Yuck!
Jonathan- I like Jonathan in the MN spot cos John and Jonny are a bit too stale.
Eleanor- I hate "Ellie" and I'm not fussed on "Nori". I'd never use it except maybe as a MN.
Madeleine- Because "Maddy" is soooo common and everyone would assume she was another Madison. Wouldn't use it.
Kirrily- This is an Aussie name if you don't know it, I love it but it automatically gets shortened to "Kirra" which I'm not a fan of at all. I can't get past this and so wouldn't use it.
Adele- I love this as a MN but I dislike Addy cos my neighbour's name is Adolf "Addy" and he's all I think of. (He's an old, German man so it's not weird that his name is Adolf).
As for your names, some Anthonys are just "Anthony", you look at them and you couldn't call them "Tony" even if you wanted to. I've known a few. I personally like "Rory" but you could try any one of the NNs we came up with in yesterday's post, maybe "Ari". I also hate "Bob" and "Larry", Rob and Lance are much better choices. A lot of Amelias get shortened to Millie... The one Amity I knew went by "Amity".

I don't mind Gus myself, but would hesitate to use August/Augusta because of awful, awful Augie

There are plenty, I'm sure, but I only have a minute so I'll just mention Andrew. It's one of our back-up names for our baby due soon, but my big thing against it is disliking Andy and especially Drew. So he'd have to only be Andrew. Which I know isn't a problem, but both siblings have nicknames and I dunno, I'd prefer to use a nickname or a full name that doesn't have common nicknames.

I generally like diminutives which seem remotely or distantly related to their common formalities, yet due to the fact that so many adults assume that I am OK with "Barb", which I despise, I am careful not to assume.
There will always be folks who take it upon themselves to use a short form / diminutive without knowing whether a person uses or likes that nickname; it is usually by adults to children; or a from a boss to a subordinate. When I consider the social roles, it seems these "name-droppers" truly enjoy these power trips. (smile)
