[Opinions] Amanita?
What do you think of Amantia? Any nicknames ideas? Is it too associated with the mushroom to be useable? Any combos if it is useable enough?

I'd immediately think of fly agarics and death caps, but people who haven't lived in the countryside or been mushroom-picking might not, and it is very name-like.
I met an Aminata once. Guessing it's an African name, as she was African.

It's cute enough, but the fact that it's a mushroom - and a poisonoius one to boot - puts me off. I wouldn't use it. But it would be cool in a story.

I've never heard of an Amanita mushroom. I'm surprised many of you have. Honestly, its a mushroom. People name kids after flowers, trees, shrubbery, birds, animals, etc. Why not a mushroom? Because it may be poisonous or hallucinogenic? So are many other plants and people still use them as names.

I like it. I first heard it in Sense8 with the nn Nita. It seemed very usable on the show (which is set in the real world, there is some supernatural stuff but the characters are supposed to have "normal person" names and Amanita didn't stand out to me). Ama is another possible nn.

It's not usable IMO. Enough people know about the mushroom that it would be terrible to bear even if your parents thought they just made it up for you.Too bad though, it would make a nifty sounding name.
Amy, Nita.

I think Amanita is pretty and I really like that it is a mushroom name. I love nature themed names. One of my favorites is Arnica. Amanita reminds me of Amanda but I prefer it to Amanda.

It isn't "associated" with the mushroom. It IS the mushroom.
There is no good reason to think that Amanita is appropriate for a person's name except perhaps a comic book villain.

I think, not usable. Nobody wants to be named after poison (Cyanide is quite pretty too..) Except on Buffy

It is not a poison mushroom, it is a hallucinogenic mushroom! Not sure if that is better or worse though for you!

Whoever told you that Amanita is a hallucinogenic mushroom is wrong. Amanita is just a poison mushroom. Psychedelic mushrooms are other kinds.

Wiki has thisAlthough classified as poisonous, reports of human deaths resulting from its ingestion are extremely rare. After parboiling—which weakens its toxicity and breaks down the mushroom's psychoactive substances—it is eaten in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Amanita muscaria is noted for its hallucinogenic properties, with its main psychoactive constituent being the compound muscimol. The mushroom was used as an intoxicant and entheogen by the peoples of Siberia, and has a religious significance in these cultures. There has been much speculation on possible traditional use of this mushroom as an intoxicant in other places such as the Middle East, Eurasia, North America, and Scandinavia.

Okay, I lacked that information, thanks. I still think the genus is known primarily for being deadly though, and the most common hallucinogenic mushrooms (here on the west coast at least) aren't Amanitas. So anybody who thinks "hallucinogenic" and not "poisonous" first when they see the name Amanita, also has only a little information.

I only ever heard of the Fly Amanita so that was my only assocation!

Haha, well my only association was that I learned about amanitas as part of a unit on toxins and poisons in biology class. "Fly Amanita" rings a bell, actually! but I'm not sure where from ... the association that stuck with me was the "death cap." And I remembered that "shrooms" are something else. So high five, we both learned something. Was Amanita the name of a character in something?

There's a Buffy episode where a goth chick renames herself as Amanita....

Nah, I was just over thinking about the Fly Amanita too much! Also this is my 1000th post to the Opinions board!

Some of the most toxic Amanita mushrooms are also hallucinogenic in addition to being deadly. I don't know enough about the edible Amanitas but lakin says at least one of them is hallucinogenic.

The Fly Amanita is one, it is often refered to as the Alice in Womderland mushroom or the Super Mario mushroom!

I'm uncertain if they are all hallucinogenic but some are. Some are edible but like with most mushrooms the majority are inedible or toxic. Some of the most toxic mushrooms are Amanitas so they have gained a reputation of being deadly and poisonous.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita
