Help[Opinions] Crystal
What are your opinions on Crystal? I actually kind of like it. It was overused in the 80s but gives me a nice winter image. I think of snow crystals and I think it would be nice on a winter baby.

Usually, I dislike gemstone names, but I like Crystal better than most. It isn't something I would use, but I have good associations with it. I know a nice teacher with this name, so I think of someone who is artistic, outspoken, and likes to volunteer and travel. It has a gentler feel like Pearl while Diamond seems more brazen and in your face expensive.

I'm okay with it. It's not a favorite or anything, but I think it's crisp and clear and snappy. I don't agree with the many here who say it's tacky and stripper-ish. I don't get that vibe at all. I knew a very nice Crystal.

I like it too and get the same image. I don't think it was as overused here - I know one, she's in her early 30s - and I don't watch tv, so I've missed any negative impressions of it.

Leslie Dunkling in his Guinness Book of Names claims it was used at the period when jewel names first crept into use, so I suppose it is of longer lineage than might appear. I just think of Crystal Bowersox, who was in American Idol some years ago. I agree it would make a nice winter name but would only use it in the middle. (Sorry for posting this in the wrong place.)

The earliest Crystal I found was born in the 1790s. It's been consistently in use since then, mostly female but occasionally on males, like the other jewel-names.

I read somewhere, a long time ago so I forget the details, that Crystal had a history of use on males in Scotland, "because" it was considered or used as a form of Christopher.
Have you seen anything to support that? I don't recall seeing it more than just that once, so it might be a flight of fancy.
