I think Minnie was first used as a nickname for Winifred (à la Margaret...Meg...Peg; Mary...Molly...Polly). Winifred...Winnie...Minnie. There is a character named Minnie on the show Lark Rise to Candleford whose real name is Winifred.
I prefer Minnie as a given name, or Minna. Love both.
