[Opinions] Names from Greek History
Here are a few names from Greek history, mythology, folklore or classic literature that have caught my eye, and a little bit of information on their bearers. I'll try not to mention too many popular Greek names, since those are widely known.Antigone : Oedipus' daughter, who sacrifices herself in order to have her brother buried, despite the wishes of the king, in a play named after her written by Sophocles.
Ismene: Antigone's more conservative sister.
Ares : The Ancient Greek god of war.
Artemis : The Ancient Greek goddess of the environment.
Pericles : Arguably the most influential statesman for Athens. Famous for rebuilding the Parthenon.
Myrsina : The main character in a Greek fairytale that is a lot like Snow White.
Magdalene "Madó" Mavrogenous : A heroine that came from a rich family and decided to donate her entire fortune to the Greek revolution of 1821. She later became one of the biggest leaders of the people.
Domenicos "El Greco" Theotokopoulos : A highly acclaimed painter of the 16th century.
Kostas Karyotakis : One of the most famous Greek poets.
Michael "Mikis" Theodorakis : Greece's best known living composer and songwriter.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~

I kind of like Antigone and I prefer Artemisia to Artemis.

I've liked Ismene for awhile, but people want to pronounce it "is mean" so its hard to consider seriously using it. I like Artemis a lot. Its a great female name that doesn't have a typical female look. I think it could be an androgynous name. I really like Myrsina. I had never heard it before.

I love the sound of names from Greek mythology, but a lot of them are either too over the top or are too tied to a specific (sometimes negative) myth for me to consider using in real life. I'd say Antigone and Pericles fall into that category, cool names, too much for real life. Ismene is cool (her story is tragic, nut I don't think people are familiar with her story) Ares, Artemis, and Magdalene seem totally usable to me. I would use Artemis and Magdalene.
