I wouldn't use Zander or Zandra, or especially Zandy, as a stand-alone name.
My nephew Alexander answers happily to Alex, Zander and Alexander (when he's being yelled at, mostly). When he was born, his very small big brother referred to him as BabybrotherZander, all in one breath, which was beyond wonderful.
I find Alexander inconveniently long, and better as a mn. If I had to use a form of it, I'd go for Alastair or Alec, though not Alex - as you say, there are just too many of them.
