Donatella is good to honouring your grandfather.
I think it could be fresher than Donato on a boy.

I read that book series too..
But Donella Hornwood had a terrible destiny..
I think it is better using
Donatella. It is more similar to Donato.
After that Donella is too similar to donnola and I'm afraid that people always will tell you 'oh..Donatella!' while their children will teasing her because of a name that nobody has ever seen before and that also is an animal-like name.
Finally.. I like strange names too. But I think that they should have a meaning for you.
So
Donella is unknown, animal-like and after that this character died in an horrible way.
Donatella is quite dated yes but it is perfect for your aim.
