I like Irving, though I'm somewhat biased because it's a family name. Out of the old man names, I think it is one of the ones primed for resurgence. I much prefer it to Irwin, Mervin, Melvin, et al.

It's old-fashioned. I've never heard it used outside of the movie Chicago (it's mentioned in the song "Cell Block Tango"), so it reminds me of that.

In the US it rhymes with swerving.
It seems like an old man name, kind of stuffy or nerdy like Mortimer or Seymour. But could be usable as a hipster-style name, along with names like Walter, Felix, Wallace, Truman, Oscar, and Desmond.
I personally don't like it. I prefer Irwin or Irvin, or Sterling, or even Mervin is better than Irving.
