What do you think of Emmanuelle?
I had a dream that we had another daughter named Emmanuelle. The problem is that I don't like any shortened form of it.. Emmy is a bit cutesy and I dislike Elle/Ellie.
Could Emmanuelle stand alone? Or would it be too long...

I think you should just use the full name.
I have a friend in Germany named Emmanuella and she goes by that all the time. I never even thought it cumbersome.
Her husband calls her Em sometimes I think, but I have always just said Emmanuella.

Emmanuelle could stand alone! But I actually kind of like Emmy, I think it's cute :) Emmanuelle is a bit dated in France, most women named this would be in their 30s and 40s now, but I still like it.
My mom is from France and I have lived in France in the past. I think many people there are aware of the movie association even though they might not be able to name it. I always thought there was something a bit erotic about the sound of this name but wasn't able to put my finger on it until I read RoxStar's reply. It must have been pretty popular so that everyone has kind of heard of it at some point. But I don't think the association is too strong. As I said there are quite a few women with this name in France, it used to be popular. If I knew a little Emmanuelle then I would associate the name with her and not any movies. It is an association that should fade quickly once you meet someone with the name. I wouldn't let me keep it from using it.

Well Jaspers mn is Emmanuel, which I love, but I don't really like Emmanuelle that much for a girl. It would be better as a mn imo, as it's so long.

So no, I don't think it's a good idea. Unless you want to use the really stupid nn Manny, or Annie, if you're stretching it, there's no good nn besides the ones you don't like, and if you're not French, the full name is pretty overblown.

I think the age of that series probably makes the association moot at this point.
I know a couple of people named Emanuelle or Emanuella and none of them seem to find themselves caught in awkward "hey, like the porno?" conversations.
While there ARE a number of people who will make the connections, I would assume they would never say anything out loud.

I am half French and have lived in France and I always thought there was something sultry about Emmanuelle but couldn't put my finger on it. I have definitely never seen this, but I think in France everyone has heard of it. I don't even know where or when but those movies must have been famous at some point and still be kind of notorious because I am sure most people have at least heard of them at some point. I don't think the association is too strong though. Emmanuelle was a common name in France in the 70s and 80s and there are quite a few around, I think the association would fade quickly. I wouldn't let this keep me from using it if it happened to be my favorite name.

Yeah, soft porn is what I think of. And the movies are famous, so I wouldn't use Emmanuelle. Emmy is cute, though.

Actually, yeah I remember that someone has brought that up before. I don't think it's a strong enough connotation to put me off it, however hubby has just announced that he doesn't like the name anyways.. so off to find a new husband for me! :D (jokes)

How well-known is that, though? In Francophone countries, at least, the name is common enough (though not uber common), to not be closely associated with that franchise. There's actress Emanuelle Béart, for instance. It's like, say, Amber, I don't think the first association everyone has in "Forever Amber"

It's the fact that the very first tresult you get when Googling Emmanuelle, and what kid doesn't Google their first name as soon as they learn to Google, is the Wikipedia page for the movies. Not even the French actress is first.

I love how it looks, but I've never been able to fully appreciate how it sounds.

I love Emmanuelle! It's one of my all-time favorite girls names. Personally, I think Emmy is the best nickname, and I've never thought of it as being particularly cutesy.
I don't mind that its pronunciation is basically the same as that of Emmanuel. I've always thought that Emmanuel sounds feminine to begin with.
Other possible nicknames are Manu (delightful in French) and Noelle/Nuelle?.

I like it, but it's too close to Emma (which is #1 in the US at the moment) for me to really love it. I prefer it as a middle name.
Used a first name, I do think it could stand alone, but some people might shorten it anyway.

I think it would almost definitely be shortened, especially in Australia. Even if you managed to get it not shorted in her young childhood, you'd have to be prepared for her choosing Emmy or Ellie herself one day. I'd imagine the most likely everyday and 'natural' shortening of it in Australia would be simply 'Em' and you'd have a pretty impossible time preventing that one. As an aside, I really quite like Em. It's much better than Emmy or Ellie!
I like the sound of Emmanuelle but it is way too obviously religious for me to ever consider myself. I would definitely assume that anyone who used the name for their child was religious.

I don't like that Emmanuelle is pronounced the same as Emmanuel and I also don't like the fact that it has the word "man" in it. I also think nicknames are entirely inevitable, sorry!
