Parent #1
Full Name: Kancha Sambid Gurung
Age: 37
Occupation: freelance writer
Other facts: Sambid emigrated from Nepal to the United States with his family when he was twelve. He studied at a small school in Maryland, and then got a job in D.C. as a reporter for a news website. It was through this job that he met Janelle, who was an intern at the ACLU. They fell in love and married after dating for eight months. When they decided it was time to have children, Sambid quit the news website and started writing freelance editorials, so he could stay home with them. In his spare time, he likes to study classic literature and cook.
Parent #2
Full Name: Janelle Lakia French
Age: 40
Occupation: lawyer
Other facts: Janelle was born in Annapolis and raised by her father, a mechanic. She knew ever since she was very young that she wanted to be a lawyer. She has a very assertive personality. When she first met Sambid, she was being interviewed by him. They both wanted children, but they decided to wait for a few years after marriage so that Janelle could get a more stable job. She did, as a legal advisor at a large non-profit. Janelle's passions are music-- especially old-school disco!-- and volunteer work.
Children
Full Name: Paras Tendaji French-Gurung
Age(s): 3
Other facts: Paras is a sweet little boy. He was rather fussy as a baby, but now that he's a toddler he's a bit more mellow. He loves to follow his dad around the house while he works. His favorite place is the garden in the backyard. He is very outdoorsy, and extroverted. Janelle and Sambid both agree he would do well with a little brother or sister, but since they waited a while before having him, the doctor advised Janelle not to become pregnant again. They think that adoption would be a great choice for their family.
Family language(s): Sambid is trilingual in Nepali, Dzongkha, and English. Janelle speaks only English, but can understand a little Nepali from what she picked up from Sambid. Sambid is raising Paras to be bilingual in Nepali and English.
Family nationality: American
Family religion(s): Sambid is Buddhist, and Janelle is a lapsed Baptist. She converted to Buddhism, and although neither of them are avid practitioners they participate in the holidays and ceremonies with Sambid's family.

"Night fell, lots of large stars came out, and the Hemulen loved his park all the better. It was wide and mysterious; one could lose one's way in it and still be at home."
