I used to really dislike Celia, until I found out that in Italian it is pronounced CHEH-lee-ah or CHEHL-ya which I like much better. Now I kind of like it. What do you think?

Oh and if you are from Italy, is it popular there? I checked out the statistics and was only able to find data from 1999-2016, but there were usually less than 5 Celias born per year in Italy. Is it unfashionable or does it have some bad associations in Italy? Just dated?

I am from UK, so can't comment on the popularity of the name in Italy. I personally prefer Celia as a nn for Cecilia or Cecily.

I like it very much, but I wouldn't use it because I like Cecily even more and I'd have used it first.

I know someone named Cyelle, which I assume is a short form of Celia which got lengthened! I'm not a fan.

In the English speaking world, no one is going to pronounce it that way. You're going to have to constantly correct people, who will tend to be confused by this pronunciation. Sure it sounds nice, but why would you do that to a child?

Anyway, I far prefer the English pronunciation.

Celia is short, sweet, and somehow endearing. I like the meaning "heavenly."

I've always liked it, pronounced the English way. I like that far more than CHEH-lee-ah or CHEHL-ya. I like it far more than I do Cecilia. It makes me think of Tudor England, because of the novel "Green Darkness". I don't like it enough to use it, but I'd love to meet a Celia. I never have.
