Immy doesn't sound awkward at all to me because, being from Australia, I know or have known a fair few Imogens and they've all gone by Im or Immy as a nickname (though every one I've known mostly goes by Imogen, Im and Immy are never all they go by).
Imogen is on my PNL and it's not popular enough in Australia for the popularity to turn me off it. It's one of those names that crops up with some regularity without it being boring or popular enough that the kid will need to go by their last name initial in a classroom. I live in the US now and it's super uncommon here so if I had my child here, I'd actually be really pushing to use it because it is so familiar to me but unusual here.
I think it's very classy, ages well, I like the nickname Immy, and it's a beautiful deep purple color to me. I've always really liked the name.
