[Opinions] Gildas and Joseph
Two names I've been thinking about today...I went to school with a boy called Gildas (pronunciation ZHEEL da) and the name popped up in a fb discussion recently. I think it's very handsomeJoseph has always seemed impossibly old fashioned to me, and a bit too religious. But I suddenly really like the sound of itSo, what do you think? And what is your favourite variant of Joseph (if any)? Joseph / Jozef / Giuseppe .....anything else?http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/167578

I've always liked Joseph - I had an Uncle Joe who was very nice indeed and died far too young. Not keen on other-language versions. But given enough sons, I'd use Joseph, nn Joe, which I think is one of the friendliest nns in existence. As names go, I think I might prefer Joel, but, hey, family reasons are powerful. One of my lecturers at uni was a Gildas and very Welsh indeed; he pronounced it GILdas. And I liked him a lot: pleasant, professional, well-informed, all the right things. If I recall, the original Gildas (back in the mists of time) started out Welsh and crossed the Channel, where he presumably became known as Zheelda. Is it used in French at all, do you know? I do like the sound, but I prefer the Gildas version.

Oh, that's interesting! The Gildas I knew was half French, and the discussion it popped up in the other day was of a Breton character - I'd thought it was a Breton name. Wrong kind o f Brythonic I see. It has been used in France but rarely

I like Joseph, but only if it's pronounced JO-sif and not JO-zif.One little thing bothers me about the name though, and that's the number of infamous people named Joseph / Josef, such as Stalin, Mengele, Goebbels, Kony, Fritzl etc. Although I'm sure there have been a lot of great people with the name too!

I was a huge fan of Gilda for a girl. The pronunciation was more like Jill-da in English. I think both Gildas and Gilda are under-rated and blighted by the English pronunciation, which is not flattering.

Gildas just doesn't work very well in an English-speaking area. It just looks like more than one Gilda, which might have been a neat gag on Saturday Night Live way back when Gilda Radner was on there. The Zheel-da pronunciation sounds very unattractive and not at all masculine or handsome to me.Joseph is a true classic and can work on just about anybody. I don't care for the full name used in everyday life, but really like Joe as a nn. Not Joey, that's too little-brat.
