Saw it on Instagram. Some semi-celeb from the Walking Dead announced her daughter's name. Wolfgang. Wolfgang?!
Mother's name is Christian, father is David.
It has gone too far this whole boy names for girls thing.

I love Wolfgang. For a boy. For a girl it's awful. It's not exactly gender neutral sounding, it's verrrry masculine.

That's crazy. I know a few male Wolfgangs and just can't imagine it on a girl or woman.

Oh that poor baby, that's a horrible thing to name a girl. I agree, the boys-names-for-girls thing has definitely gone too far!

I'm much rather see a girl named Wolfgang than a girl named Riley, Carson, Emerson, or Parker.

i don't think it should be judged worse than Wolfgang on a boy, or other uncommon boy's names on girls. i get the point of wanting to tell one's gender, but i feel like most people have such a problem because Wolfgang sounds too rough for a girl- and why does that matter, why do girls names have to be pretty while boys names can be rough.
on its own- boy or girl- it's pretentious and ugly, but also could be fun for the kid like...no one will forget you. you could build a cool kid vibe out of it.

Another actor on the show has a son named Mingus, maybe they are around ugliness so often on the set that they just can't tell the difference anymore.

I can't even think of a remotely palatable nickname for that child. Who looks at a little baby girl and thinks, "You look like a Wolfgang!"?!

I actually think Wolf is a cute nn for a girl.
I would never use the name Wolfgang on a boy or girl myself... but I guess people are sick and tired of giving girls names because society thinks they are pretty.

Do baby girls look that different from baby boys? Genuinely asking. I see a lot of babies, in my line of work. They all just look like babies, unless someone has decided to give them a shirt that says "TOUGH LIKE DADDY" or a headband with a giant pink bow. (Then, imho, they look like projections of their parents' assumptions.)

In our mums group, the first week there were a lot of babies in really gender neutral colours (white, grey etc.) and there were a couple of babies that really looked like a boy or a girl. Some you couldn't tell at all. My daughter has never been mistaken for a boy even though I often dress her in boys clothes. I think she just looks like a girl.

I think that no matter how gender neutral you would like to be, if you know your child is a female by the sex organs she is born with and is most likely to grow into a little girl and then a young an old woman- and you picture all of that as you look at that tiny baby and give it the best name possible- I don't understand how you look at that and think "Wolfgang it is!"
I am completely accepting of the gender spectrum and I'd support any child that I have who happens to be gender non-conforming or transgender- but the fact is that we don't expect that as the norm from our child. That's our own socialization and statistics.
So yes, when I look at a baby that I know and that I'm about to name, that baby looks like whatever sex it is.

I think your post pretty well sums it up. Wolfgang would be a pretty bold choice for a boy. It's just jarring on a girl.

My daughter really looked like a girl from birth and my son really looked like a boy from birth.
But with some babies you can't tell.

Ugh, that is horrible. I love Wolfgang on a boy, but I think it's awful on a girl. I was disappointed by August, but this is just ick.

Hahahahaha I was wondering when James and Michael wouldn't be enough and people would go to Hector and Wolfgang for their daughter :/ It's awful. Maybe they did this because the mom also has a name that is perceived as masculine, Christian? But Christian was actually used as a girls name in the middle ages and she can go my Christie but Wolfgang? :O

Does anyone here have any idea what someone is thinking when they name a daughter Wolfgang? This is a sincere question. I would like to know what the appeal of this is.

They are thinking "I hope my kid grows up and gets offered a job at full percent instead of 70% of the expected pay" based on resume alone.

Wolfie is a sweet nickname. Many girls like wolves, not just boys. The meaning itself is gender-neutral -- wolf path. I'd imagine they think it sounds "tough and cool" and likely has some further personal significance we don't know.
I don't expect any of you to agree with me, but I think it's fine. Statistically a lot of this generation's children may not identify with the gender they are assigned at birth anyway.
I just wish we'd see more feminine-associated names on boys.

Aren't most meanings gender neutral? David means 'beloved', Timothy means 'honoring God', Felix means 'lucky' etc.
Wolfgang is a very traditional name that is quite dated in Austria at the time. One of my parents is Austrian. It's kind of like naming your daughter Alfred in the US or something like that. But they don't live in Austria so I guess for them it's different.

On the other hand I find Christian to work better on a girl, same with Julian. It's fun to think about which names could work on the other gender :)

Yes, most meanings of names are gender-neutral. It's one of the reasons I see no issue with them being given to any child, regardless of anatomy. :) I mentioned that because mirfak was wondering what the parents could be thinking.
