In my mind, the male and female versions are kind of separate.
When it's used for boys, I think of it as a variant of Robert. It still sounds a little feminine, but that's because it's got that soft "n" ending, like Dorian or Tristan. I like a lot of boys' names in that vein, although Robin is not my personal style.
When it's used for girls, I hear a pure nature name. She was named after the pretty bird.
