Rupert, but I hate both.

Edgar. Rupert sounds like what an American would name a very stereotypical, over-the-top British character.

Edgar hands down. It's elegant and slightly sinister. Rupert feels either childish or old-mannish.

I like them both so its difficult. I think Edgar wins over Rupert though as Rupert does have a sort of nerdy vibe while Edgar is more confident.

I would go with Rupert. I have a strong dislike of both, but I associate Edgar with the butler from The Aristocats.

Edgar. It's a family name;I had an uncle Edgar.

Rupert. It's a sweet name, and I've liked it a little more (though not enough to add back on my list) ever since I heard it on a little boy at the shops.

I've never met or even heard of anyone called Edgar here. Might work on a very elderly tortoise.

My instinctive choice was Rupert. Then I remembered a first cousin of my mother's who is or perhaps was Edgar; I met him a couple of times and he was perfectly pleasant. But I still headed towards Rupert. I think I'd prefer Rupprecht, but either would be a nice change from Robert (also a family name).

I think Edgar is terrible, one of the first things I think of is the character from Men in Black.

I would choose Rupert, which isn't that unusual here, and is much more streamlined and elegant than more popular Robert.

Edgar is one of those ugly old fashioned names that does not need resurrecting. I can't imagine anyone living today with this name

No nickname options? Well, There goes Edgar who I'd call Ned on a daily basis. So Rupert wins for me, no nickname needed. :)

This is hard! Even though I love Edgar Allen Poe, I feel like I would choose Rupert. ETA: I actually find myself really liking both.

I'd also go with Edgar. I like Rupert more on paper, but when I picture myself calling a son that, I want to laugh. Edgar is a little too growly and bearlike for me, but it is just ... more real than Rupert.

Rupert is getting popular here (ranked #136 in 2016). It used to be seen as a 'posh' name but now it's becoming more mainstream. I know a 2-year-old Rupert.

Edgar is more dated close to it.

I had a great uncle (by marriage) named Edgar, and he was a real fun guy, but I'd still have to go with Rupert. Edgar makes me think of eggs, because when we were children, my sisters and I used to call our great uncle "Uncle Egger", not pronouncing the D in the name. Eggs are okay, but I don't like when names make me think of a food, no matter what the food is. So Rupert it is.
